Curtea de Arges Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in Romania, located in the town of Curtea de Arges, built between 1515 and 1517 by Neagoe Basarab. The ensemble comprises the Episcopal Cathedral, one of the most famous architectural monuments in Wallachia. The cathedral is included in the List of historical monuments in Romania, having the classification code AG-II-a-A-13628. During Carol I, the cathedral was turned into a necropolis for the royal family of Romania. In addition to the royal tombs, the relics of Saint Filofteia are also found at Curtea de Arges Monastery.
If in 1857 the monastic complex was kept entirely, two fires of 1866 and 1867 destroyed the seminary buildings, namely the dwellings, the chapel and the entrance tower. At Carol I's initiative, the church was restored from 1875 by the French architect Lecomte du Noüy, which led to the replacement of the original fresco with a new painting and other radical changes to the interior structure. In 1886, the restoration of the church was completed and the royal palace on the eastern side of the complex began to be built, later transformed into an episcopal palace.
Since 2009, the construction of a new cathedral where the tombs of the royal family of Romania that will have died since then, as well as the relics of Saint Filofteia, will be placed.
