Cryptocurrency: New Styles Of Cities And Government?

Liberstad now has a coin. The world's first autonomous city free from government is using POS to create a blockchain along with its own token.

Of course, the term city might be a stretch at this point since it is really nothing more than a vacant farm. That said, they did sell 100 plots to people from around the world.

The Libertarian dream is a place without government. Thus far, we are seeing the groundwork laid for a new style of government.

Whatever the future of Liberstad, it does open up the question: what is possible now that we have blockchain and cryptocurrency?

The tendency is to look at these technologies in a straightforward manner. Cryptocurrency is a currency, hence we equate it to what we know. But what about that which we do not know? What are the possibilities going forward?

This is what should get the imagination going. We literally are looking at a means to recreate society. Nothing that went before can compare. We are operating at a point in time when anyone can create a currency. This is something that was a challenge before this.

Also, with the use of blockchain, we can see an entirely new style of governance emerge. Will it replace what is in place? Only time will tell. However, since we see a broken system all over the world, it is time to consider what we can do.

What most interests me is the fact that the world is full of naysayers. This is not surprising since, for so long, there was little that could be done. Now, with technological advancement, we are seeing a different perspective. What was never possible before is now.

Decisions can be made quickly via an ongoing voting system. Just look at the voting for Witnesses on Steem. Each vote is up to the minute. If someone adds a vote, the rankings change. The reverse is true for removing one. The rankings are not based upon a snapshot at a particular date. It is real time.

How about a situation where a city has to decide whether to spend a certain amount of money on, say, an infrastructure project. The pros and cons could be weighed. People could speak out for and against. Analysis could be done while the "voting window" is open. Individuals could alter their votes as often as they want while that window is open. As more information becomes available, the votes can select as they see fit. This all could be real time right up to the point the window is closed and the decision made.

Under this scenario, people could represent themselves. There is no need for "elected" representation since each person's vote is representative of what they want. Could this work on a national scale? Perhaps the logistics might be too great. Then again, maybe not. It could, however, alter the face of local politics. Do you really need a city council when people could present their issues each week and the populous vote upon it?

It is beneficial to look at the bigger picture and ponder what can be done. We are at the very early stages of this technology. Humanity is only starting to experiment. Nevertheless, the fact that the monetary system has the potential to be radically altered holds great hope.

With this, something that was a crazy idea a decade ago now could be possible.

Think on that for a while.
