An interesting thing happened the last couple day according to the daily report put together by @penguinpablo.
Sign ups are picking up, at least for the last two days. We saw a significant jump in the number of accounts approved.
As you can see, yesterday hit a level not seen since early November, before Ned's announcement about the layoffs.
The bulk of the sign up still came from Steemit.

So what gives?
While I am not thrilled that Steemit is still contributing such a large percentage, it is good they are approving accounts. If history is any indication, this will be short lived as evidenced by the charts. Hopefully, we will see it continue though.
Of course, I would prefer if the DApps were taking up a larger part of the sign up process but I guess they are still trying to figure it out. At some point, one will break the code and the rest will follow. This will decentralize the ecosystem a great deal more.
As many of you know, I monitors the accounts each week that achieve different levels of SP from 1 to 5,000.
This week, after two weeks of going negative, saw an increase in the number of accounts reaching 1 SP. We still have a few days to go since my reports are done Sunday afternoon. Nevertheless, we are seeing a turnaround at this level.
https://steemitboard.com/ranking/index.php?p=10486&s=vests
We were under 262,000 as of the last report.
It is good to keep in mind this is SP meaning that it was most likely reward for activity on the Steem blockchain. This means it is always running a week behind. The accounts achieving 1 SP took the action a week ago.
The turnaround in the numbers makes some sense since the two negative weeks were over the holidays.
It is becoming evident to me that the numbers keep improving each week. Accounts are reaching higher levels which is helpful. Perhaps if more people are signing up (and getting approved), we will see the pace of change increase. The direction is obvious. Steem is going in the right direction with the distribution of the coins. The challenge is that we are moving at a snail's pace.
I guess we have to walk before we can run. We still are very early from a technical perspective especially with the DApps. The more time that passes, the more the developers have to offer new users.
That said, Steem is still kicking ass on the State of the DApps site. These are the Steem apps ranked in the Top 25.
The Top 20, especially, are well represented by Steem applications.
Who knows: there might be a few Dolphins in the making in the 5,600+ accounts that were approved in the last couple of days.
In spite of it all, Steem is making steady progress.

the 9/11 controversy probably caused people to come but more importantly it allowed for the question "why was steemit able to censor someone? I thought steemit was uncensorable" ... which allowed users like us to educate these people by addressing their question with the following answer.
"steemit is first and largest dapp running on the steem blockchain. But steemit is NOT steem. The steem blockchain is uncensorable and anything censored on steemit can still be viewed using another dapp"
side note...kinda funny... steemit does't know that "uncensorable" is a word.... try it...if you are on steemit click reply and type in uncensorable lol you will see red squiggly line underneath indicating there is a spelling error when there clearly isn't

Looking at the whole spike/valley trend in approved accounts, seems to me that perhaps someone at Steemit, Inc. finally got around to approving the backlog that had built up over the past three weeks! I just hope some of those people who applied before New Year's actually will use their accounts.
Cool how much the dApps are showing. That portends well for the future.
Bright Blessings!

Yeah. I'd love to see thousands of accounts approved day after day. There's got to be some ridiculous backlog going on there.

yes I placed a request for a new account on Dec 15th and only got it approved yesterday. Almost a month later (double the time promised). At least the wait time should reflect reality. I have also seen one #introduceyourself post where the user claims to have waited 2 months for the approval. So it seems someone at Steemit Inc just woke up from their slumber

We still have a long way until people realized that they are missing out on steem's benefits for them @taskmaster4450 but it is good that accounts are being approved a lot than on previous months.

Does anyone have data on actual usage? Looking at the number of new accounts is fine, but most social networks maintain "user engagement" data. It is this data that investors generally look at to see whether a network is a good investment.

I feel like steem is on the cusp of going big. With more game and lifestyle dapps, more and more people will be able to benefit from being rewarded for everyday activity, like you often write about. Once SMTs launch, I feel it will be the final push for things to really kick off!

Didn't some group announce a project where you could buy a steem account for 2$ and got a bit of steem power on top of that? I wonder if it contributes.

as long as steemit.com remains the top app, the bulk of the signups will continue to come through there. Let's hope that the uptick in accounts is an indication that steemit inc is getting their act together and getting their backlog dealt with.
