It pains me to admit, that as a follower of technology, I was totally caught off-guard by what Amazon did. Of course, most of us saw the potential of Amazon and the growth of it starting to really be noticeable about a decade ago. However, I still recall when it dawned on me, in 2014, that this company was blowing everything apart in retail. This was affirmed over the past 5 years as many major retailers entered bankruptcy with more to come.
You know a company is doing something when the name becomes a verb.
The key to disruptive technologies is they are often not noticed. They fly under the radar for years before the mainstream catches on. Even those making progress are overlooked in the marketplace. The reason is rather simple: the gains, while they could be extraordinary in terms of percentage, usually are small in totality.
That is, until they are not.
Even looking at a chart of the exponential curve tends to tell the story.
Right now we are reading everything that is wrong with blockchain, and especially cryptocurrency. The naysayers have the pulpit and they are using it. Even the ones who advocate blockchain, the latest being Jamie Dimon, are referring only to something they control. This is missing the entire premise of this technology.
There is no doubt the path, thus far, is littered with landmines. We are seeing the struggle of an industry to mature. Unfortunately, part of the process is to lave behind some carnage. It is never a straight path to the top. This provides fodder for those who keep espousing why this will not work.
Here is the reality of the situation. To uncover what is taking place, one must investigate. The reason I missed the impact of Amazon was because, even though I looked at things from a technological perspective, I did not delve into the retail world deep enough to understand what was truly taking place.
Relating it to this field, I will point to a video @theycallmedan posted a little earlier. It was suggesting that everyone buy at least 1 STEEM, power it up, and let it ride. He view is that someone will not regret that move. It is obvious he is optimistic about STEEM where others are not. Where did this come from?
Judging by his posts, it is simply a result of him spending the time to investigate what is taking place. He is not just reading the headlines buy delving deep into what is going on here. This is how the gems are found. And, agreeing with his assessment, STEEM is a hidden gemm
Here is the full video that he put together.

Right now, the world of cryptocurrency seems like a wet dog. The naysayers have all the fuel. Mainstream economists and political ideologues are on the offensive. We see an industry that looks dead.
Of course, that is only surface level. When we dig a bit deeper, we truly see what is taking place. Bitcoin is expanding. Litecoin is working on privacy. Ethereum is upgrading. On and on, we can point to development that others do not see.
So does this mean there will come a point where the rest of the world will wake up? I believe so.
And you know who will not be surprised? Those of us who are on here each day interacting with cryptocurrency. We embraced an ecosystem that is a microcosm of what is taking place.
Without going into a long discussion about the state of the economy, we do see some headwinds that are going to have an impact at some point. What happens is anyone's guess. We can conclude that there will be a recession at some point, most likely in the next three years. When that happens, the fall out could be tremendous. This means that people will be looking for alternatives.
I am optimistic that cryptocurrency will have the "Amazon" moment. Few see it at this point but, then again, how many saw the devastation in 2001 that Amazon was going to create? Those that did, if they held their stock, are sitting pretty right now.
Stranger things have happened.

Another alt that I think is seriously overlooked is Turtlecoin
At first glance, it seems like a joke coin similar to Doge, but it's actually really solid once you take a closer look.

Doesn't happen often that I read an entire post word by word from the start till end. I like the comparison of the steem community being a miscrocosm in the bigger picture! Great post

I was just thinking this morning about how a lot of good foundations are being laid on the steem blockchain lately. It may not be soon but I really believe steem is going to skyrocket in the future 🚀

Agree and if you follow the millions of dollars flowing into the underlying technology, you would be able to really get a feel of the foundation being built for the future growth and adoption that will occur.
