Finding a topic for my presentation at the Steemit Meet-up in Ghana wasn't easy. Firstly, I was more interested in meeting people's needs than in just making a presentation. I was not clear on the demography. If for instance we had more investors in attendance, my presentation would be not be the same as if I was talking to some university students. Thirdly, the notice was too short and I had too many things on my plate including a very annoying flu.

I decided to talk on the Effect of Steemit and Steem in my Community because I felt it would appeal to a larger audience. It would appeal to everyone because everyone is part of a community and everyone who is sane should care about community.

How Does Steemit Currently Affect The Society

Steemit is needed in societies where corruption is rewarded and honesty is a self-sacrifice. People should know that they can make super gains from being honest too. I've listened to the way some young people talk about corrupt politicians and internet fraudsters. Young people may mistake financial gains with real success.

Steemit impacts a community positively because it incentivizes community development and good social interactions.
If you're antisocial and you don't care about the next human being you are not going to make it in Steemit. So I postulate that a lot of people would pretend to care until they actually do care.

Steemit is built on the principle of value for value. When people realize that all they have to do is provide value they would buckle up in order to make the buck.

In Steemit you don't need anyone's permission to be successful but you will need to serve people. It's decentralized. If you can read and communicate your thoughts on paper you can be anything. This value system is good for society.

Today is @ajremy's birthday so I'm going to be using him as a typical example of how Steemit can positively impact an individual and a hence society positively.

@ajremy started like every other average Steemit user. He started blogging and at first, he was making all the mistakes but once he made $93 from a single blog post he suddenly gained an extra chunk of self-esteem and an extra zeal to make it. He started buying gadgets and investing in his Cryptocurrency education. The other day he talked about learning some programming languages because the cryptospace is in need of programmers. @ajremy is sixteen, his peers starts asking him how he got his money. He tells them he got it from the internet. At first, his friends become suspicious because in my country, when you tell people you work in the internet they would say you are a fraudster. That would be the first thought that would cross their mind. @ajremy starts teaching his peers how to blog on steemit. He gains more self esteem and Steem. He has positively affected the lives of his peers and that creates a ripple effect, an endless chain reaction of positive impact. More young people stop admiring the looters of society and learning that being good is far more profitable.

In steemit, phrases like "think and grow rich" and "your network is your net worth" becomes very literal. Think! Proof of brain means you prove that you have a brain by writing quality content and then we give you money. Build a network! Proof of heart means that you prove that you have a heart by socialising and contributing to the community.

Steemit creates a gateway for those who would have not been able to invest in Cryptocurrency to do so with their sweat.

Steemit is now a source of employment to many unemployed youths and those who have jobs can have something as an alternative source of income.

How Would Steemit Affect The Society in the Future

The way steemit currently affects community is very obvious. You can see it right before your eyes but the way steemit would affect my community is one thing I kept thinking of. I'm interested in the consequences of my actions. What would be the result if majority of "everyone" gets into steemit. Would it be a good thing?

My research led me to the purpose of steem and Steemit. I discovered that steemit was not even the original intention of the creators. Dan Larimer's goal was to solve the major problems associated with bitcoin scalability, reduce energy cost of mining, improve throughput and create a Cryptocurrency that would achieve mass adoption fast. Steemit is the aftermath of that desire.

The way steemit will affect society is tied to the purpose of steemit. If you ask @ned he would tell you that the purpose of steemit is to tokenize the internet.

What would the world look like when the internet is tokenized?

If you ask @dan he would tell you that the purpose of Steem and Steemit is to Secure Life, Liberty, and Property. Why do I say so? It's is because @dan's life's vision is to Find Free Market Solutions to Secure Life, Liberty, and Property.

Steemit can be a cure to poverty to those who are of sound mind and who deserve better. People who have the brains but have been cheated by centralised systems can come here and show proof of brain and get $$$$.

When ordinary or average people join Steemit, they go through the following phases as displayed in Maslow's theory of needs.

From the bottom of the triangle upwards. They start by trying to fulfil basic physiological needs like food, shelter and clothing. Then they proceed towards the top of the pyramid and aim subconsciously for self actualisation.

People will first secure their life, then they will then secure some property and eventual attain self actualisation and secure their liberty.

Steemit is a free market solution to secure life, liberty and property and it affects my society by doing just that.
