Freedom is the ability to do anything as long as it doesn't violate the right of your neighbor or fellow man.
In 1960, Nigeria gained independence from her colonial masters. The country was birthed like a child, and it went through different stages of development to get to where it is now.
But this post is not just about Nigeria, It is also about democracy. Democracy is basically the idea that the people have the power to choose their leaders and make decisions based on majority voting. In Nigeria, democracy became established in 1999 when Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo was elected into office as President.
There was the military regime before democracy and it was plagued by coups and counter-coups. It eventually ended after the death of Gen. Sani Abacha in 1998. His successor Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar promised a transition to democracy and it finally happened in May 5th 1999.
Arbitrary arrest and torture, lack of civil liberties and free press are some of the things that you will find in the military regime but they don't exist today.
Today the police still abuse the rights of citizens, there is still so many things wrong with the government, but things have really improved. You will not get shot for talking bad about the government and no one will torture you indiscriminately.
This is the best time to be alive. We are entering a new era of decentralization and freedom. An era where corporations will be replaced by companies an era of decentralized applications where humanity will have primal importance.
Today is democracy day, it's also a day to give thanks. I am grateful for democracy. I'm grateful that I enjoy a certain level of freedom. I'm grateful for the ability to exercise my freedom and right in good faith and conscience.
Happy Democracy Day to everyone!

Hey happy democracy day to my country. But come to think of it are we truly in a democratic rule or are we not under a civil rule.
Reasons for my question are
When the answers for these questions become possible to answer then I can say we're under a democratic rule.

We have come a long way small in the Nigeria politics and freedom journey. Indeed this country is strong having come through several developmental phases that threatened its existence but here we are still standing.
