THE BLACK KING OF THE COLONIAL EPOCH

in busy •  6 years ago
When we had enslaved but rebellious people here, the first enslaved Africans arrived in Nueva Cádiz around 1526, to replace the Indians in the work of extracting the oysters that contain pearls from the bottom of the sea (a very hard job).

They also put them to work in the gold and copper mines, which they found on the mainland and in the construction of roads. Afterwards, the main use of enslaved blacks was in agriculture, and that of enslaved Negroes was the attention of the children of their masters and the domestic trades, some were the ones that received the best treatment; since they nursed the babies and became attached!

The slave ships of the European companies came full of human beings to sell them in America like any other merchandise. The enslaved were considered things that were bought and sold.

From the beginning there were rebellions, I will tell you a very famous one because
had King. In the sixteenth century, whites began to exploit the gold mines found in Buria near Barquisimeto (Venezuela) and San Felipe, where they took around 80 Negroes enslaved for mining, including Miguel Negro.

FUENTE

At the beginning of the year 1553 he had a lawsuit with the Mayoral of the mine, then fled with his wife Guiomar, his little son and other enslaved blacks. I organize accommodation in a nearby hill called Curbudare. There he proclaimed himself King, appointed Queen Guiomar and crown prince to his son, organized the government of his "kingdom" that even a black bishop had.

Negro Miguel won the support of other enslaved and jirajara Indians who lived near his "kingdom". He came to count 200 men as his subjects, he became a scourge for the whites of the neighborhood, on one occasion King Miguel attacked with his people to Barquisimeto. The rebels were defeated but they were able to return to Curbudare, very few were imprisoned.
To defend Barquisimeto from other possible incursions by King Miguel, an expedition with four Diegos at the head emerged from El Tocuyo: Diego de Lozada, Diego Ortega, Diego García Paredes and Diego Escorcha. Guided by an enslaved prisoner, the enemy arrived at Curbudare and attacked the rebels. Negro Miguel, the leader of the first uprising of enslaved men in the Colony, died.
