Since a week or two we (my wife and I) are watching the Reality soap "Gene Simmons Family Jewels". This is a serie about the Simmons Family and was recorded and broadcasted years ago in the states.
For the people that don't know Gene Simmons (should be a few I guess lol) Gene Simmons is the bassplayer of the world famous rock band KISS. Together with Paul Stanley he is the founder of the band.
Most people will know him as the "Demon" , his Kiss Character.
I had seen, a long time ago, some footage of the serie and thought it would be fun to watch it finally. The advantage of an older serie is that you can binchwatch all seasons :) Which we almost did the entire holiday.
Gene is happily 'unmarried' as he says, he is already for 27 years with Shannon Tweed, a former playmate. For her it is a big deal he didn't want to get married. Eventually they did after all....
He is very succesfull in business, did you know that Kiss is the most merchandised band in the world?
Besides Kiss he has about 37 companies (or is part of a company) in all kind of fields... He's a busy guy :)
Although the serie is quiet staged in some episodes (I don't know if it's typical american) there are some occasions in which I really believe to see the man he is... A family man...
For instance this episode where he had to tour with Kiss in the Netherlands. He walked into this little fan (13 years) which wanted to interview him for school. He wanted to talk with him about his family roots and the fact his mother has been in a concentrationcamp during world war II. The visited the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam and Gene was very emotional because he saw his mother in Anne Frank, they were about the same age. It was really telling to see. After they visited the Anna Frank house the young guy invited Gene to his home to see his grandfather, who also survived WWII. Gene told the story of his mother and how hard it was for her, even after all those years, to speak about it...
Behind the big businessman as he is (and big Rockstar of course) was a humble and emotional man... I thought it was really telling....
Funny to see that a rockstar of his caliber has never smoked, been drunk or has no tattoo's, not like that is a normal thing but often it goes hand in hand with being a rockstar. He sure is a womanizer (or at least has been for quiet some time) but he really shows being a true family man with high morals and values....
If you do like reality shows, this one I really recommend.

It's quite a difference between his show and the Osborne's show that was on a while ago too. Ozzy was quite a bit more out there than Gene. You are right though, I think some of it is pretty staged, but all of the interviews I have seen with Gene reveal him to be a pretty down to earth genuine person.

I haven't seen any episode of this reality and just some of The Osbournes. To be a businessman like him, he has to be a clever guy, far away from excesses like Ozzy. Actually Ozzy has Sharon to take care of the business.

haha yes indeed , Ozzy was more out there .... a lot... I do think too he (Gene) is very genuine.... The way he is as a dad on TV, the things he does...the way he does it.... I think it's no fake... Ozzy is a complete different story :P

You should look for the episode of Dr. Phil where Gene Simmons was trying to counsel a guy who was freeloading off his parents waiting to make it big as a rock star. I was really impressed with the way he represented himself.

wow, didn't saw this before. The message he is telling underneith his story to the guy doesn't enter his head but is so so true... When he says "I never borrowed any money" , I believe him 100%.... He has come a long way and has done a lot to get there.... respect...
