We Are Our Own Worst Enemies -Rambling

in busy •  6 years ago

I came for the community but stayed for the money:

Of course, I am joking and twisting the phrase "I came for the money and stayed for the community".

The price is low and Steemians are grumpy again.

Remember Charlie Shrem, The Dollar Vigilante, SteemSports, The guy who wanted to sell Gold Powder to consenting adults?

Do you remember how the community treated those accounts?

Remember flagging that Racist? Or the Anti-Vaxxer?

Not just a nice flag though, generally followed with a scathing personal attack.

Remember when we ignored the YouTube star or attacked the Meme Platform?

You will all tell me in the comments why it was justified, but many of us were hoping for a Free Speech platform where the votes decided who earned and who didn't.

You know how sites retain users? They have giveaways, spend advertising money, they engage with end-users and they make it easy for people to find and engage with others they may know or have things in common with.

Some want to say our early users do not matter because we will have dapps. Well, it takes about the same amount of energy to build a dapp on any of the blockchains that are focused on smart contracts or Dapps, so why Steem? If you were a business person, with a development team do you want to build on a Blockchain with declining price and users or somewhere there is excitement and momentum?

Restaurants clean even though they don't charge for it directly because people don't want to eat in run-down dirty restaurants.

People are attracted to happy places with fun people and yes, they want engagement.

Rambling thoughts, but I guess the point is all accounts large and small can play a role in helping to make Steem attractive to end-users or not.

Many are complaining about Steemfest and while I found the videos to be .. a bit boring those that were there seemed to be having a great time and they felt energized by it. In my opinion, that is great, we can use all the positive energy we can get.

Maybe the event didn't translate to video well, but was still a success for those who attended.

And those who want to complain about who sponsored it... Where was your money? Your ad?

Some of you need to stop complaining about what everyone else is doing and start doing something!

It's going to be a long grind before SMTs if the entire Market doesn't get a pump, and it isn't going to be an overnight success either. We will have to go through the phase where everyone attacks what was done, reminds us they had a better idea. Some will play Sunday Morning Quarter Back and post lots of ideas on how they could have handled it better.

People will write negative posts about Steem and bot them up to the top of trending, in the name of "contributing".

Yes, we are our own worst enemies.

I don't comment much, but I've loved every single one of your posts I've read. So today, I'll break with precedent and tell you -- once more, you nailed it. I don't have much more to add. <3

Wow! Thank you.

I remember the gold dust guy. That was a funny time. He came in with his $1000 post telling us that we’ll speak to Jebus with his special dust. I miss that guy. What happened to him I wonder? Maybe he snorted too much dust and is hanging with Jebus permanently now.

He came in with money and offered personal testimonies. He bought a bunch of SteemMonster packs he was going give away.

He spent some time in SteemSpeak and he was basically attacked so hard that he didn't come back.

I doubt anyone would have talked to Jesus, but just because something hasn't been studied yet, doesn't mean it doesn't have any benefit.

Consenting adults should be allowed to have access to buy what they want.

Yeah the attacks were a bit harsh on him. I was in Discord when he came in to chat and most people were reasonable to him and gave him some encouragement to try again. I was actually waiting for his new post where he did a giveaway but never saw anything pop up.

I agree that people should be given the chance to exercise their own judgement. His gold dust thing did seem very scammy though.

I came for the money and stayed for the money.

Funny thing is, that I'm not even looking at the price. Just posting my stuff and carrying on, growing slowly but steadily.

Missed most of the drama I think, can only remember the Gold Dust Guy.

But I'm curious: Who was the youtube Star?

Oh, We've had several youtube stars!

"have had" doesn't sound that good. 😂
Missed all of them I think. The most stuff I can find on youtube regarding Steemit is from the time beginning of this year, where the peak was.
I started back then because of that and I'm still here, I hope that is at least a good sign. 😇

Actually, I think the low Steem price provides great opportunities for businesses as it makes it cheaper to acquire a stake in a blockchain that has proven its value through scaling and transaction costs with various projects; most notably @steemmonsters. It has amso demonstrated its flexibility in building on top of it with a proof of brain concept that while not perfect will bring more flexibility with the launch of SMTs. Still buying...

Yeah, we have lots of good things coming. I'm hodling.

Yeah, doing something always is the most difficult. You're right, it's not only about the dapps. I've recently convinced about 15 people to join. How difficult it was to get them onboarded! And then, they're not even buying STEEM to pump the price up a little bit...

I think that the biggest issue at the moment is that there are no clear incentives to buy a large stake for end users. For businesses, the benefits or impact might be more visible, but they're already investing in building a product, so it's actually a penalty.

As long as everyone is just here for the rewards, price obviously can't go up :-)

Maybe we should make a poll to find the best arguments to buy STEEM, not from an investor's point of view, but a users'.

Yep, I don't even know why I hold stake at this point. Speculation... is the only reason I can come up with.

In a bull market, even the shittiest coins will go up. :-)

I must confess I havent seen any posts moaning Steemfest so Im suprised so I will hunt some out and tell them what I think!
I think it looked brilliant and its what a family or community does, has a get together, and has a great time. Im just sad I couldnt attend. I do however stay right off damn trending these days!
I think most of the for me with the big shot you tubers is they were only here for the cash and not the community, they didnt get how much the community and engagement mattered to most people.
I think Steem is great at the moment for me.
I genuinely came to read, then thought I could make a few quid, realised I was a shit writer and couldnt and stayed cos a found a load of people I liked and or respected.
All is good. I'd give you a hug if I weren't such a sweaty smelly foreigner in a tropical climate!

Not saying that there are not legitimate complaints or constructive criticisms that can be offered, but some people complain because it is in their nature to do so.

So true. We have a person in SteemSpeak who looks for reasons to be mad. Sigh, it must get tiring.

I came for the Steem but stayed for the Smart Media Tokens.

What of Destiny? :winks:

It’s a complete mystery to me. Maybe I’m not paying attention?

I remember Gold Dust. I quietly downvoted the post, went back later and saw him treating everyone like thugs for flagging the post, saw him talkin' shit about the place, so I gave it back, put on a show for everyone. Every time I downvote, I get treated like shit. Oh well...

Yeah, there is a thread of truth in all of it... :) I've been guilty on some of these too, and I certainly wished Jerry Banfield would go away!

Very true - but I'm not saying peep :)

peep

people will write negative because they want to see steem blockchain to evolve better sometime criticism makes stronger :)

I think, people who have negative thoughts will always complain of something, be the price at 10$ or 100 $ or what not. But its important we continue doing something positive , to show the power of the blockchain to people outside and bring more positive people here. And the dapps are doing great. Platform like musing , steemhunt, fundition are certainly increasing the awareness of the blockchain outside.
