On a 4 mile hike through the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area I saw dozens of monarch butterflies migrating south along the shores of Lake Michigan.

The first 2 miles of my hike was through the woods. The monarchs appeared on the beach for my mile hike south along the shoreline. This is the first time in my life I've seen so many in one place. I've noticed a few here and there along the roadsides while hiking here for the last couple of weeks, but on my mile hike along the shoreline I saw more than ever. I'm sure there must be thousands along the entire coastline. What an awesome spectacle of nature to experience in person for the first time. I'm not sure how far south they migrate from here, but I do know they eventually migrate to the state of Michoacán in Mexico. Here you can see thousands in the forests perched in the forests during the winter. That is on my list of things to see on my travels in the future. It's hard to believe these fragile creatures could make it that a distance from Michigan. I wonder what percentage actually make it to their winter destination. Does anyone know? I'll be researching their migration routes to find out and if I find that answer I'll post it here later. Truly one of the marvels of nature.

Today was cloudy, cool and calm along this part of Lake Michigan. You can see in the video the lake waters were very calm. This is one of my favorites of all the places I've now visited in my life. Nature has presented me with so many wonderful sights and for that I am very grateful.

Peace, love and vanarchy,

Thanks for sharing your opinion on this. I was going to post somthing similar but you really nailed it. well done!

Thanks for being a friend of nature and the environment. Peace.

I always carry a bag with me on my hikes so i can pick up trash along the way. If everyone would at least do this simple task it would definitely make a differnce. If I'm staying in a campground, i usually leave the place trash free. I especially get tired of seeing toilet paper along the hiking trails and campsites. I'll do more to promote in my blogs the simply idea of suggesting women take a bag with them so they can carry out their toilet paper when they tinkle in the woods. You won't find even a cigarette butt, a bottle cap, a plastic straw, a twist tie, a bread bag clip, a candy wrapper, or any tiny plastic wrappers of various kinds when I leave a campsite. I think mother nature has rewarded me thousands of times over with good karma for being so considerate. Try it and you will see. Thanks for liking my blog and upvoting.
