in butterflyday •  5 years ago

Known in the field as
Root Borer.

Beetle family with short antennae.

Adults 2.5 to 5.7 cm, which are reddish brown with smooth shiny wings, emerge from the ground from June to early August. Males are smaller than females and have more strongly serrated antennae. Adults do not feed.
They are nocturnal, more active than females.

With a life time of approximately 10 to 20 days, after mating.

The larvae, cream to brown in color and strongly segmented, look for roots shortly after hatching. They furrow and tunnel through the roots as they consume tissue, move up and in, and often kill the apical regions.

Root borers are considered an orchard pest especially on fruit trees in the Andean region in many cases causing tree death or infection.
