Like most people, I was initially attracted to Byteball because they were giving away free tokens. In case you haven't heard, they are doing an airdrop of free tokens to Steemians. If you have a Steem account with reputation 30 or above, you can get free Byteball tokens just by following these instructions!
So far there seems to be really good synergy between the two projects. Both projects are looking to "bring crypto adoption to the masses" albeit through different means. Byteball is looking to make the use and adoption of blockchain "smart contracts" as easy as using a cell phone app.
I have been impressed with how well they have integrated with the Steem community so far, and happy to see the Steem blockchain becoming more widely used in the cryptocurrency community.
Most people who have received their free tokens via the airdrop have probably done one of two things with them: cash them out via an exchange, or HODL (hold onto them and hope they go up in value).
In this post I want to explore a few other things that you can do with Byteball.
(1) Sports betting. This can be found in the Byteball wallet under the Chat > Bot Store > Sports betting bot menu.
(2) Purchase insurance against flight delays using a built in smart contract system. This can be found in the Byteball wallet under the Chat > Bot Store > Flight delay insurance menu.
(3) Bet on a prediction market whether cryptocurrency tokens will go up or down at BinaryBalls.com. (Here is a brief tutorial video).
(4) Provably fair Luckybytes Lottery. This can be found in the Byteball wallet under the Chat > Bot Store > Luckybytes Lottery menu.
(5) They also have a platform to run ICOs and launch new assets.
(6) You can 'donate' your devices spare computing power to help scientists solve health and sustainability programs. By doing so, you can earn daily rewards for your contribution to the "World Community Grid" computations. This can be found in the Byteball wallet under the Chat > Bot Store > World Community Grid menu.
(7) Play a text-based multi-user dungeon (MUD) game that uses provably fair gambling. This can be found in the Byteball wallet under the Chat > Bot Store > Slice&Dice MUD menu.
As the Byteballs platform continues to grow in popularity, it will likely attract more developers to build even more apps. I look forward to seeing what cool new things they build, as well as new possibilities for our two communities (Byteballs and Steem) to interact.

You did the right thing, but I hope that you did not claim your Byteball yet.
Get it at least to 40 in order to get double the amount.
Each round reputation ranking entitles you double the previous one.
The problem is that there is a finite final amount of Byteball, similar to Bitcoin, Litecoin and ZCash and not similar to Steem, Ethereum and most other cryptocurrencies, so your time is limited.
This is why I claimed my Byteball share after I reached a full 60 and did not wait until I reached 70, which may never happen and will most likely not happen this year or the year after.

It's readable even without specialized knowledge and describes precisely what the platform has to offer. Actually you may find out that it's the most brilliantly designed cryptocurrency since the creation of Bitcoin.

I ended up using mine for other coins I wanted, but I at least still have my $40 in smart contracts as I have >60 rep on my main account. Though I do wish I gave the betting bots a crack to see what they are like, maybe another time.

What you give away with linking your Steem account to Byteball account is a data that is already publicly available on Steem blockchain. Only thing you do during this process is that you verify that you have access to that Steem account and that is done via SteemConnect.
Byteball Bytes are given away for free because it doesn't have distribution method like mining, so it needs to give all the coins away to users who will use it, but that applies to pretty much all cryptocurrencies that there is no point for them it they are not used.

The referrer used to give free bytes to referrals to cover Steem attestation fee but now no need. Just click a referral link, install the wallet and so on. Real name attestation is not required, it is only an option. :)
