Is CalExit a Good Thing?

In a word, no! From a libertarian perspective, secession is valid, is a right, and often times a beautiful thing. However, secession is only as valid as the principals used to justify it.

Both the Founding Fathers and the Confederate States of America had principals to justify their secessions. They both felt that their rights were being violated by the governments that they tried to secede from, which was very much the case with regards to war taxes imposed on colonial Americans during the Founding Fathers’ time and tariffs imposed on the Confederate Southern states to fund railway and other industries for which only the north would benefit.

With CalExit, however, there are no principles used to justify the secession. It is really just a hatred of President Donald Trump. The great tragedy is that while President Trump has presented many policies that are worth hating, the average supporter of CalExit likely just points to phony and tired ad hominems such as “he’s racist” or “he hates women” blah blah blah. I’ll go out on a limb and state that the average IQ in California is probably not too high either. California is already considered the socialist state in the union, and with socialism owning literally a 100% failure rate, California would be part of that record if it secedes.

The only way I’d be convinced otherwise is if the Founding Father equivalents to CalExit, whomever they are, actually present principals and objective reasons detailing why they want to secede, and what better laws & policies would be effective in California if the secession became a reality.

Not to mention the damaging effects the secession will certainly have on trade and commerce with not just the remaining 49 states, but with many other countries too. That topic deserves its own exclusive post.

Probably none of this will matter because the reality is, CalExit isn’t going to happen. President Donald Trump, as someone who has praised Abraham Lincoln as his favorite President(second of course to himself), will never permit California to secede, even if it would make it easier for him to win in 2020.
