Impostor phone scams are one of the main variations of phone fraud that take place every year in the United States. Commonly scammers will impersonate IRS agents, county clerks, and police or FBI agents. The main aim of these types of phone scams is to get sensitive personal information from you.

Jane received a phone call from a person claiming to be an agent from the IRS. The caller told her that she owed back taxes and that if she didn't pay them immediately, she would be arrested. The caller instructed her to provide her personal information and to pay the taxes through a wire transfer.

Jane, feeling frightened and pressured, provided her personal information and transferred the money as instructed. After she hung up, she realized that she may have been scammed, and contacted the IRS.

The IRS confirmed that it was a scam and advised her to contact her bank to try and cancel the wire transfer. Unfortunately, the money was already transferred and it was impossible to retrieve it. In the end, Jane lost a significant amount of money, and her personal information was compromised.

This is an example of how phone scams impersonating IRS agents, county clerks, and police or FBI agents. The scammers are able to trick people into providing sensitive personal information and money, by using fear and pressure tactics.

These type of scams are very common and it's important to be aware of them and to not give out personal information over the phone, unless you are sure of the identity of the person you are talking to.
