"a proposed Caltrain extension in San Francisco... is now expected to cost $8.25 billion for just 1.3 miles of additional service."
CalTrain runs up the peninsula from San Jose to San Francisco stopping a little short of downtown San Francisco, but with easy transfer to transit to the heart of downtown.
With CalTrain ridership down, in large part because office space occupancy in SF has crashed, spending over $6 billion per mile is an unconscionable waste of taxpayers' money.
For comparison, SF is completing its Central Subway project for an unusually high cost of over $900 million per mile. And New York recently completed its East Side Access rail tunnel for $3.5 billion per mile, both inflated from original estimates.
