Hello, steemians!
About a week and a half ago I wrote a post about working on the roof of my travel trailer. In that post I talked about sealing the seams on the roof panels. In this post I'll be telling you about replacing the old roof vent.
I'm pretty sure that the old roof vent was the original one on the trailer. The entire vent was made from aluminum, so it didn't let light in when it was closed. I needed to pull it off the roof because the seal under the mounting was leaking, and removing the entire vent is the easiest way to seal it properly. I had decided that as long as I was going to pull the vent off the roof, I might as well replace it with a newer one that will let some light in even when it's closed. I had ordered a new vent last summer and had it waiting for when I finally got around to doing the work.
This is the old roof vent.
The first thing that I had to do was to remove all the screws that were holding the old vent assembly on the roof. Most of the screws were pretty rusty.
Once that was done, I was able to remove the vent.
Once I had the old vent removed from the roof, I had to add some wood pieces to the roof framing before I could install the new roof vent. There was nothing to screw the new vent to other than the thin aluminum skin.
You can see the holes where the old screws for the original vent had been.
All I had to do was to cut some pieces of wood to fit in the space, and then screw them in place.
Once that work was done, I laid new sealer around the opening in the roof where the new vent would sit, and then I put the new vent in place. I screwed the vent down with roofing screws. I left the protective wrap on the plastic vent cover until I was done working on the vent.
Here's the new vent from the inside of the trailer roof. I still need to install the trim piece on the inside, but I won't do that until I finish the inside of the roof.
I did this work at the beginning of October while the weather was still decent for working outside.
I recently mounted and finished the wiring for a set of tail lights for the trailer. I'll talk about in my next post about my trailer.
That's all I have for this post, I hope you found it interesting!
You are well done! 👍
