Canada Post can not guarantee package deliveries before the holidays

Canada Post can not guarantee parcel delivery before the holidays because of delays caused by the strike movement of its factors this fall and "illegal checkpoints" at some of its facilities since the coming into force of the special law forcing return to work of the strikers last month.

In an email sent to QMI Agency on Sunday, the state-owned company said it is currently facing an accumulation of 6 million parcels across the country.

"Our inventories are almost three times larger than last year, less than three weeks before Christmas. At the moment, because of the accumulation of parcels and the accumulated backlog, we unfortunately can not guarantee deliveries before the holidays. "

In its message, Canada Post indicates that the rotating strikes of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) from October 22 to November 27 resulted in significant delays in the processing of parcels and that "the high volumes of parcels arriving and the recent illegal dams, it's hard for us to keep up. "

"Illegal roadblocks are led by employees who are not represented by CUPW," says Canada Post, adding that they are held in several provinces, but not in Quebec.

Delays will mainly affect packages. For those sent from Canada to destinations in Canada, "deliveries continue, but there will be delays during the peak of the holidays and in January 2019".

The most affected parcels are those coming from abroad, with delivery delays of several weeks, which should gradually decrease this month and at the beginning of 2019. "However, it may be necessary to wait until March before that we are able to deliver according to delivery standards, "warns Canada Post. For parcels sent from Canada to another country, there may be slight delays.

For the letters, "the volume should be back to normal and deliveries updated before December 25," said the state-owned company.

Canada Post's factors returned to work on November 27 after a special law was passed by Parliament to end postal disruption in the run-up to the holidays. Since then, "community picketing" activities involving citizens and members of other unions such as CUPW have been taking place regularly at Crown corporation facilities in some provinces, with the effect, inter alia, of transport of mail.

In the meantime, the parties must continue to negotiate in mediation mode, as mandated by the special law, in order to settle the issues that remained unresolved when negotiations broke down a few weeks ago.
