When I was in school, we managed to avoid talking about the Vietnam war.
Still, we had the debate team and we spoke of issues of the day. We weren’t afraid of being “uncomfortable” due to ideas, opinions, and certainly not facts. People read Marx and Ayn Rand and argued about it.
American history, and contemporary culture, are part of the civic reality that students need to understands to become adult citizens.
I respect that local communities want to set a tone, and have a right to. But at some point it seems we are enforcing wilful ignorance, and that’s child abuse.
Facts, including the fact that oppressed people have certain opinions and experiences, shouldn’t make anyone ashamed to be white. Any more than they should particularly be proud to be white. They’re just white. Deliberate ignorance is shameful. Opening your mind to history and literature isn’t.
