Breast self examination (BSE) is a screening method used in an attempt to detect early breast cancer. It involves a woman looking at and feeling her breast for possible lump, discoloration, discharge or swelling.
The most appropriate time to carry out breast self examination is just after menstruation because at that time the breast is less likely to be swollen or tender.
BREAST SELF EXAMINATION IN 4 SIMPLE STEPS
Step 1
Begin by looking at your breast in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips.
Look out for breast shape, size, colour and possible swelling. Check the nipple for redness, rash or any other distortion.
Step 2
Raise both arms and look for same changes as in step 1. Check for any discharge from the nipple, it could be watery, milky, yellowish, or blood.
Step 3
Lying on your back, use the right hand to feel the left breast while the left hand is placed under your head and vice versa, use a firm smooth touch with the first few fingers, keep the fingers flat and together, feel the entire breast and breast area from the collar bone to the top of the abdomen and from the armpit to the cleavage.
Follow a pattern to be sure that you have covered the entire breast. Begin at the nipple moving in circles until you reach the outer edge of the breast. You can also move vertically. Be sure to feel all the tissue of the breast.
Look out for any lump or pain.
Step 4
Feel the breast while standing or sitting down. Follow the same method as described in step 3.
