CIGARETTE SMOKING: A RISK FACTOR FOR LUNG CANCER

Smoking is by far the biggest preventable cause of cancer. Chemicals found in cigarette smoke enters the blood stream and can then affect the entire body.

Smoking causes about 90% of all lung cancer cases. The main way smoking causes cancer is by damaging the DNA, including key genes that protect against cancer. The chemicals found in cigarette causes DNA damage. Smokers are less able to handle toxic chemicals than those with healthy lungs, chemicals in cigarette smoke makes it hard for smokers to neutralize toxins and this can make the immune system less effective.

It takes years for lung cancer to develop. It occurs when abnormal or damaged cells grow uncontrollably in one or both lungs. These abnormal cells develop into a tumor and disrupt d normal functions of the lungs.

A person with lung cancer may experience a cough that won't go away and shortness of breath. In its advanced stage, the cancer cells can spread from one lung to the other and can also spread further to the lymph nodes and organs such as the brain and liver, it can also spread to the bones.
