A proud champion, with a record of 57-2-2 and 39 knockouts, never lost a single fight before his bout with Russia's Dmitry Bivol on Saturday night. Fighting inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Canelo Alvarez fought valiantly, landing 84 punches in total - one of his lowest totals ever.
Unfortunately, his opponent, undefeated WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, had other plans. Pulling off an upset victory with a unanimous decision and three 115-113 scores, Bivol captured the Canelo Belt. All three judges called it a TKO for Bivol.
"I'm sorry I ruined your plans [for a fall trilogy fight against] Gennadiy Golovkin, maybe," Bivol said. "Congrats to [Alvarez], he's a great champion. But if you don't believe in yourself, what do you do? You won't achieve anything. Me and my team believes that."
