There's a darn good chance that we'll see boxing's Floyd Mayweather go up against UFC's Conor McGregor in a rematch here soon. Only this time, the bout would be in McGregor's corner of the universe — the Octagon.
It's not etched in stone. But a rematch of last August's boxing match in Vegas would be quite the spectacle. And a pretty big draw for Dana White over at the UFC.
In speaking out about this possibility, former light middleweight and middleweight world champion Canelo Alvarez did not hold back in his opinion.
"I respect boxing. Boxing's my sport. That's what I love. The other sport, that's something we'll never know," Alvarez said, via TMZ Sports.Alvarez's opinion shouldn't be taken with a grain of salt. After all, some have in the past viewed him as the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet.
The Mexico-born champ also didn't hold back on his overall criticism of Floyd.
"With him you never know ... but you know what? Whatever he does doesn't interest me."Love him or hate him, Floyd brings in the money and the press. Mayweather's purse for August's fight against McGregor — based largely on pay-per view totals — was estimated to be at about $400 million. He also ranks No. 1 All-time on the SNIPdaily Boxing Top 100 for popularity. It's not even close between him and the No. 2 figure on the list, Anthony Joshua.
For his part, McGregor was said to have earned north of $130 million for his losing effort against Mayweather. He's also No. 1 all-time on our SNIPdaily UFC Top 100. And again, it's not close.
Alvarez might have an issue with Floyd jumping to the Octagon. That's fine. But given that money talks in this industry and based on the popularity of these two greats, there's no reason to believe it won't happen.
