Canna-Curate School Of Cannabis Cultivation: Getting Through Mid & Late Vegetative Stage

in cannabis •  6 years ago  (edited)

So your plant managed to survive the first two weeks. Good job, you just might be a natural born grower! Now your aim is to get her through vegetative stage with as little stress as possible

Once cannabis hits 3rd node of leaves, the root system starts expanding rapidly getting deeper and wider while scouting the soil for water and nutrients. The trick in this stage is to provide enough of both for the plant to thrive without going overboard.

For this reason you should grow your plant in a balanced medium, which has low phosphorus and potassium content and only slightly more nitrogen (1-1-2), but is rich in calcium/magnesium. Optimally you should reach 80% base saturation of these both cations with 7:1 calcium to magnesium ratio.

Additionally, your medium should have enough silica, iron, molybdenum, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, sulphur, nickel and chlorine, which all perform essential metabolic functions. And there's a simple way to find out what's in your soil by TESTING IT in a lab!

If you don't know what's in it, and unfortunately many producers don't put this ESSENTIAL information on the label, you're asking for trouble, which 90% of the time shows up via nutrient lockout or burn (take my word for it).

But let's assume, that your soil is good, and your plant grows well. Keep the RH up to 70% if you grow your plant indoor, and proper air flow. If your RH is on the low side, mist your plants twice a day with pure water.

As far as watering schedule is concerned, you should use wet-dry cycle in veg, which means you water your plant abundantly, and then wait until the medium is so dry, that she starts drooping. Outdoor, cannabis can go without water in veg for as long as three weeks, but indoor it's usually between 5 and 10 days.

This stimulates root growth, and no tricks will give you bigger and healthier root than this!

For this reason you should also put your plant in a biggest pot possible just after she's done with her solo cup or starter pot. This'll allow you to bypass a common problem, which is getting root-bound, that can often masquerade as nitrogen or potassium deficiency.

Around early/mid veg you can also start training your plant if you grow her in limited space, if she responds very well to it, or if she yields better this way. For topping/fimming you should usually wait until 4th or 5th node, the same for LST.

Fertilization is optional in veg, which means you can do it, but it's not necessary if your soil has been well prepared and tested. Occasional shots of nitrogen, potassium, silica, calcium, magnesium and micro-elements are useful for some plants, while others get by without them, which you can only find out by your own experience.

In general, you should be shooting for the healthiest, strongest and most vigorous plant possible by the end of veg, which can enter flowering without any nutrient or pest problems. And if you got it, you just might have a real knack for it.

I recommend at least 8 weeks of vegetative stage indoor for optimal yield, and at least 20 weeks outdoor!

Stinks I don't have the space to do this, then. I love reading about it, though, and maybr someday I'll have the approrpiate space in order to cultivate. I love nature, anything about her, and cannabis is just one of her many gifts. Our mother doesn't have the respect she deserves in so many circles.

Yeah man. Some people just have no respect for their mother earth. Its a shame. But hopefully we can bring that about a little more day by day.

It's definitely one of my goals in life.

Back when everyone smoked weed with seeds I knew this dude who would throw his seeds in this empty lot behind his house to get rid of them. He hoped the wall one day and found 3 mature plants and two were female. It always reminded me of that jeff Goldbloom line about life finding a way lol.

Haha I think I got left off the list of people who delegated.

Sorry, the list was out of date. Got ya up there now.

No problem lol. I figured that it was just an old list that was being used in these posts.

This is unrelated but I was meaning to ask if there is an age limit on the posts that are submitted for an upvote? I dropped one on discord but it was aleready 2 days old so I wasn't sure if that was past some deadline or something.

No age limit, sometimes things slip through the cracks of our organization skills though. We will do our best to get to it.

Cool and thank you. I questioned as to whether it fits in since it is fiction about cannabis growers. It was a chapter from a novel that deals with cannabis and growing as a major elements of the story. The author has been posting them for months and they are pretty well done but he hasn't recieved a ton of attention for them.

It is up to you guys as to whether it is right for an upvote but I thought it was worth taking a look at.

Great post guys! Everything you need to know!

Letting your grow media dry between watering also prevents root rot! I use the 'lift test' to see when my pots are ready for water as dry soil on the top doesn't necessarily mean a dry pot!

I have to argue about the roots though brother... check out this post I just made about using additional transplants and mycorrhizea to increase root mass. I challenge you guys to give it a shot!

LIFE HACK: As your neighbors if anyone has tested the outdoor soil. My local Rec. grow tested our local soil and although it looks sandy and bare: Our soil is actually high in minerals, nitrogen etc.

Doing my best here :)

Your doing great!

"Outdoor, cannabis can go without water in veg for as long as three weeks

What do you mean exactly? In open soil? If you grow in pots i wouldn;t wait for 3 weeks.. Maybe if they are really little, but especially with the last hot weeks pots dry out very rapidly.

If they grow a certain height and you "know" your plants, you will see the leafs hang when they are thirsty.

Another thing growers can do is to weigh a pot and anticipate on that. Or buy a tensiometer.. This thing will measure the rootpressure and will show you precisely how much water they need at that moment.

Yeah 3 weeks directly in soil. In pots they won't make that long for sure :)

The smaller the pot the more frequent watering

Pots have their pros but open soil rules. Let mama nature deal with it. :)

Couldn't agree more! And that's why I'm transplanting a few seedlings outdoor tomorrow :)

Good post, great knowledge!
Keep on!

We will for sure :)
