US voters in four states—Michigan, North Dakota, Utah, and Missouri—will decide whether to approve some form of legal marijuana on Nov. 6. The effects of their choices will likely waft all the way down to Mexico.
It seems like Mexico is helping doing their part as well to hurt the cartels, because The Mexican Government recently ruled that the prohibition of cannabis was unconstitutional.
"The rulings pave the way for adults to use marijuana in any way they see fit. We aren't just talking about recreational use," Froylán Enciso, a drug policy researcher at Mexico's social sciences institute, the CIDE
Of course, all of this is common sense, and people have literally been saying that the best way to hurt the cartels is to legalize drugs, but let's still give people on a pat on the back for taking a step in the right direction. I'm not saying that in a snarky way, even though it comes off like that. :)

Decriminalization would entirely remove the profitability the gangs and cartels are exploiting based on the price assessment of a task that could lead to prison time.

Exactly. The cartels don't just sell weed, though, unfortunately. As far as society as come recently on their attitude toward cannabis, I don't think we'll get baby boomers on board with decriminalizing all drugs any time soon. The entire war on drugs needs to be ended, and sadly there are some people (in power) who actually think the war was successful.
