Meet A 57-Year-Old Grandmother Who is Also A Cannabis Farmer

Laurie Maceachern is a 57-year-old Canadian cannabis farmer that has been using medical cannabis for many years now, producing it for roughly 5 years. She grows enough medical cannabis to last her all year long and she says that the garden costs her roughly $300. If she were forced to purchase cannabis from a licensed producer in the country it could cost her much more and she wouldn't be able to afford it on her limited income.

"It takes less than nothing to do this" says Maceachern.

Maceachern used to have a lot of back problems and she was forced to use a variety of pharmaceutical medications like oxy and percocet; she took as much as 27 pills every day. But now she only takes cannabis for her pain, she doesn't even drink. Hers is just one more case of many found where an individual was suffering from immense pain and couldn't find any relief until they turned to cannabis.

"Once I got using medicinal cannabis... I was able to detox... and I haven't used pharmaceuticals in nine years or alcohol." says Maceachern.

As of this week, Canadians will now be permitted to grow a "limited" amount of cannabis on their own property and the "freedom" to do so stems from a case 2014 in which the judge determined that Canadians had a Constitutional right to grow their own cannabis.

Cannabis still isn't legal for recreational purposes in Canada, although they do have a task force heading the operation and it's expected that it will be legalized by 2017.

All the health benefits of marijuana are amazing. I think we are only beginning to scratch the surface of what this incredible plant can do!!

I was wondering if she was farming hemp at first then the picture of her inspecting buds on a short plant with a jewler's loupe answered that question. Keep on growing!

Beautiful story.

Would she like to join Steemtopia? I would like Steemians as a collective, to pool together and purchase some land and essentially create Utopia...I know it sounds mad, but hear me out...

I'm happy to find you! I'm also in Canada and have been ingesting cannabis for 8 years. The right to grow was a huge win for us. Your plants look great!

Great story. Sounds like most of me and most of our friends. Growing your own medicine is a right not a privilege. I hadn't heard about the Canadian supreme court decision. NICE!! and just. thank you, oc
