All aspects of the Cannabis industry pose unique challenges, dispensary operators and managers are smack in the middle. We aren't just people who know a lot about this herb, we have to balance a multitude of things at any given time and I wanted to take a few minutes to offer some advice on finding a budtender job in the industry from the perspective of the person who is gonna hire you.
First things first get the proper permit BEFORE applying. Each state has a handler card for the industry.
If your application is written in glitter pen, you are wearing pajamas or you're intoxicated when you turn it in, just don't.
We aren't sitting around burning bowls and screwing off, we bust ass to build our dreams. I consume a fair amount of concentrate each day, many people consume daily but we are all 'high' functioning. We are killing lazy, negative stereotypes by working hard , yet still enjoying the fruits of our labor.
I don't care about your ink or piercings as long as you practice personal hygiene, speak well and know your shit.
Use the thing you're on right now and start researching everything about cannabis and whatever company you're applying at. Be a regular customer, you don't have to spend a lot just pop in and get to know the vibe and the people, you should be able to pick up some basics of the operation just by being observant and chatty, that will give you a leg up on other applicants and keep you top of mind. If you get a "fuck off" vibe, you probably don't wanna work for that kind of place anyways.
Get your workers permit! DO IT! DO NOT submit an app without one for your respective state. You will get passed over without it. Did I mention to get your workers permit? Yeah.. you should do that.
This is not a normal retail job, you will see people at their lowest points and even have some tears shed. You will be working with customers/patients that have a wide variety of medical issues and they come to us to improve their quality of life. If that is not something g you respect this probably isn't the best job for you in the industry. You will have amazing people who become friends that will pass away, this can be a very emotionally taxing job if you enter with a bad perspective.
Don't try too hard since we are in an industry that is generally chill, ego and abrasiveness are generally frowned upon and pushed out pretty fast. Know what you know, but more importantly know what you don't know so you can learn from those around you.
If you're honest, show initiative and a willingness to learn, you're a viable candidate as far as I am concerned. I love this industry, its a dream come true to do this for a living and be on the forefront of something you're passionate about. I hope if you are seeking a budtender position that this info might help on some small level. I would be happy to answer any questions if people have any.
