For today's weed news we go to the great state of Maryland.
Back in 2014, on April 14th to be exact, Maryland's House Bill 881 was signed by then Governor O'Malley, legalizing medical marijuana in the state. But it took until December of last year, yep 2017, until the first piece of medical weed was legally sold in Maryland.
But it seems that things have finally started to pick up steam. According to the Baltimore Sun, in just the first nine months of 2018, the state sold over $67 million worth of medical cannabis. That is $21 million more than the $46M that experts predicted the state would sell in all of 2018.
And now, a senior economist at New Frontier Data is saying that before the end of December, Maryland's grand total for medical sales could actually top $100 million dollars!
And from the looks of it, next year has a good chance to be even more lucrative for Maryland's medical marijuana industry.
That is because, in order to make sure that their MMJ scene doesn't get monopolized by a few really large players, lawmakers recently tweaked Maryland's MMJ laws to allow more grower and processor licenses to be issued.
That means more competition, more variety of product, lower prices, more jobs and more money are coming to the stare in the coming months.
I got a feeling that 2019 is going to be the year that the East Coast really starts embracing cannabis. And it's awesome to see Maryland already emerging as a piece of that green puzzle.
