Indeed! A good hint and easily overlooked. Ideally your soil around the deeper rootstock should never significantly rise above 20C... in pots that's almost impossible during summer...

If you paint them white or use tinfoil it really helps.

yeah, I actually use white agricultural foil both wrapped around the pots and to cover the soil surface also.

In a natural environment the soil surface would be covered with small plants, grass etc... and would thus protect the surface from direct sunlight... I've actuall seen people grow in pots like that with a socalled "covercrop". apparently stuff like clover can be really great as it also provides better nutritional balance in the soil... not sure about that though!

Indeed I worked often at farmers and they use also I think the same agriculture foil.

I also like to put some hay on the soil while they're small and can't shade it on their own.

Thanks for dropping by.. If you use open soil no problem with the heat of the soil (imo)

put some tin around your pots. And feel the difference on a hot day. Indeed hay is possible. But soil also have to breath. Or im i thinking wrong? :)

But yeah keep those bad girls cool if outdoors and if in pots, try to place holes in the soil as well so it can better breathe. But don't chop up the roots ha!
