Golden Goat Origins and History
Golden Goat is a marijuana strain which has been around since 2012, and became a big hit almost as soon as it arrived on the scene.
The story of this popular strain goes back to the farm of a grower known as Mr Dank in Topeka, Kansas. It was created by chance when a hybrid Hawaiian-Romulan male pollinated a sativa Island Sweet Skunk female.
The resulting strain not only looked attractive, but also tasted great and provided the happy, energetic buzz for which Golden Goat is so famed today.
Golden Goat is a sativa-dominant hybrid, with 70% of its genetic makeup coming from its Hawaiian and Island Sweet Skunk sativa heritage. It is a potent strain, containing between 16% and 23% THC and around 1% CBD.
Despite its birthplace being in Kansas, sales of Golden Goat have really taken off in neighboring Colorado, where it can now be found in dispensaries up and down the state. Golden Goat even won the 3rd place award for best medical hybrid strain in the Denver 2014 Cannabis Cup.
Golden Goat Appearance, Aroma, and Flavor
From an aesthetic point of view, Golden Goat is an extremely pleasing marijuana strain with tightly packed, light green leaves, and dense buds which are interspersed with pink-red pistils. The buds are coated in generous amounts of golden trichomes, which give this strain its name as well as an abundance of THC and other beneficial compounds.
The aroma of this particular marijuana strain can be best described as sweet and lemony. Its flavor is a complex blend of sweet, sour, spicy and earthy notes, with undertones of tropical fruit that can be traced back to its Island Sweet Skunk mother.
This winning combination of good looks, appealing aroma and unusual taste are just a teaser of what Golden Goat has to offer. So, do this strain’s effects and medicinal benefits really live up to its promising first impressions? You bet they do!
The Effects of Golden Goat
Being sativa-dominant and high in THC, Golden Goat gives you a strong, clean cerebral high which lasts between one and two hours. Most users of this strain report feeling uplifted, energetic, creative, giggly, and social.
This combination makes it an excellent strain for smoking while hanging out with friends, or just when you need some extra inspiration for creative projects. Some people have even reported mild psychedelic effects from Golden Goat, with enhanced sounds and colors and closed-eye visuals being a possibility.
However much fun Golden Goat may be, it is important to bear in mind that it is a relatively potent strain and inexperienced cannabis users should approach it with caution. The high can creep up on you rather than kicking in straight away, so start slowly and gradually build your dose up over time to find the right balance for you. This will ensure that you continue to enjoy all of the benefits of Golden Goat while minimizing the possible side effects.
Although it is strong compared with some other strains, in the right doses, it is still possible to be highly functional with Golden Goat. This makes it an ideal strain for using earlier in the day or if you have things you need to get done.
Medical Benefits of Golden Goat
Golden Goat’s sativa dominance means that it has the potential to increase positive thinking, boost energy levels and creativity. It is best known as a pick-me-up strain and could help with managing the symptoms of mood disorders such as chronic stress, PTSD and depression.
It could also potentially benefit people suffering from short or long-term fatigue, or anyone who just needs a little extra help to get through the day.
Having inherited 30% indica characteristics from its Romulan father, Golden Goat can also act as a muscle relaxant. This means that it could help to relieve muscular tension, stiffness and pain. Combined with marijuana’s anti-inflammatory properties, this means that Golden Goat may be useful in the management of back pain, joint pain and neurological pain including sciatica.
In addition to these medical benefits, Golden Goat may also help to relieve all types of nausea and stimulate your appetite. This gives it the capacity to help with one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, as well as encouraging normal eating and weight gain in conditions such as wasting diseases and anorexia.
Possible Side Effects of Golden Goat
Although Golden Goat may be helpful for conditions such as stress and depression, it does have the potential to produce side effects including anxiety and paranoia, causing your heart and mind to race.
So if you are already anxious by nature or suffering from an anxiety disorder, this may not be the best strain for you.
It is also probably not ideal to use Golden Goat just before bedtime. Its uplifting, energizing qualities mean that it could stand in the way of you drifting off naturally, and it is far better suited to use earlier on in the day. So if insomnia is your chief complaint, it may be better to avoid Golden Goat in the evening and choose an indica-dominant strain instead.
Other possible side effects of Golden Goat include dry mouth and dry eyes, dizziness and headaches. The plus side is that you shouldn’t be too incapacitated to get up and get yourself a glass of water!
As with many different marijuana strains, Golden Goat has been known to cause some serious munchies, so be prepared and keep a few snacks handy.
You can reduce the risk of side effects by starting off with a low dose of Golden Goat until you know how it affects you personally. Once you are familiar with the strain you can build up to your desired level over time.
Growing Golden Goat Marijuana Strain
Golden Goat is moderately difficult to grow, but if you do decide to attempt growing this strain, you will be rewarded with an extremely impressive and attractive plant. However, it is on the tall side (up to 72 inches!) and needs a lot of room for both roots and branches to allow it to grow to its full potential. It therefore grows best outdoors, where it has the space it needs to stretch its branches up to the sky.
This strain prefers a dry and sunny climate with warm temperatures of 72–80 degrees Fahrenheit. If you do decide to grow it indoors, you will need to ensure that your plant has plenty of heat and light as well as a spacious area to spread out into.
One of the bonuses of growing Golden Goat is that it is a hardy strain with good resistance to pests and parasites including mold, mildew, bacteria and fungi. It is auto-flowering and should be ready to harvest after 9–11 weeks of growing indoors. If you are growing outdoors, your Golden Goat should be ready to harvest by late October.
As it grows, Golden Goat may seem like a somewhat gangly plant, but as it gets closer to harvest time, your plant’s branches will begin to fill out take on a beautiful golden color. There is no need to top your Golden Goat plant during the vegetative stage, but some pruning of the lower stems will help to encourage thicker top growth later on.
Whether you grow indoors or outdoors, you will need to ensure that your Golden Goat plant has enough nutrients and water, so keep it well-hydrated and use a good quality fertilizer. You should yield around 16oz/m2 from indoor grown plants and around 14oz per plant for outdoor grown.

*Good article - didn't really see anything at all that needs to be changed in terms of claims, etc. The only thing I'd say is to throw in a few sources from the Sources Library document for the medical conditions mentioned (see highlighted conditions above).
Good work on the tone of the language i.e. making sure to use phrases like "could be," "potentially," "possibly," etc..

This is a great post! I want to read more of these. I'm looking for a strain that relieves joint pain during the day and keeps me productive/social at the same time. I have no real mood problems so simply a strain that doesn't 'down' or 'lock' me plus relieves pain would be amazing. This sounds like a possible match but maybe too strong for me. If there are more strains in this 'category' you could recommend me I'd love to know :-) Thanks for the detailed info!

I have inflammation problems and back problems that can only be treated with heavy doses of pain killers-- naturally I don't take them with cannabis at my disposal. Megaladon, Pink Kush, Neon Gelato have done a lot of me as far as mobility and keeping my pain levels tolerable. Also, I cannot speak highly enough about the effectiveness of topicals.

Thanks a lot for your input! I'm searching and will take your experiences in account. For me it's inflammation related as well. Thanks :-)
