Only under hot box conditions for at least an hour according to a three part study conducted by researchers at John Hopkins University School of Medicine.
In this series of studies, cannabis smokers and non-smokers were placed in either a ventillated or non-ventillated room to assess if second-hand smoke causes intoxication in non-smokers. They found that "passive non-smokers can become legally intoxicated with slight subjective impairment in extreme conditions, such as a small, unventillated room, where a large amount of cannabis is being burned in close proximity to the non-smokers".
-Cone (2015) Study III of III
Cone (2014) Study 1. Figure 2.
Each study was a "session". That's right, a good 'ol pass-the-joint group sesh. The conditions of the sessions were as follows:
<5% THC (of a smoker's dose) delivered to non-smokers
6-18% THC (of smoker's dose) delievered to non-smokers
<5% THC (of smoker's dose) delivered to non-smokers
Two factors affected intoxication of non-smokers: quantity of cannabis burning and room size/ventilation.
The results demonstrated that extreme cannabis smoke exposure can produce positive urine tests at commonly utilized cutoff concentrations, aka "legally intoxicated". However, positive tests are likely to be rare, limited to the hours immediately post-exposure, and occur only under environmental circumstances where exposure is obvious." See Study 1, figure 3.
-Cone (2014) Study I of III
"During Sessions 1 and 2 (unventilated conditions), there was rapid accumulation of smoke inside the chamber that persisted throughout the 1-h period, whereas in Session 3 (ventilated condition), visible smoke was present, but at lower levels".
Room size and ventilation has a pronounced effect on exposure to secondhand cannabis smoke. Under extreme, unventilated conditions, secondhand cannabis smoke exposure can produce detectable levels of THC in blood and urine, minor physiological and subjective drug effects, and minor impairment. Exposure under ventilated conditions resulted in much lower blood cannabinoid levels, and did not produce sedative drug effects, impairments in performance, or positive urine screen results.
-Hermann (2015) Study II of III
So, if you're worried that you might get high, don't hang out in small, unventilated rooms which are obviously visibly filled with smoke. Remember, the bigger and more ventilated the space, the less contact of second-hand smoke. Vaporizing is a good way to eliminate smoke production; vapour in a ventillated room does not produce second-hand exposure. A 2018 study showed that there was no second-hand exposure to staff administering vaporised cannabinoid products to patients in a hospital setting.

When you're smoking or even vaping somewhere as ventilated as this, some stupid prude will still come along and pretend that they're getting intoxicated off second-hand smoke which couldn't possibly physically reach them. We need to remind those people that they're experiencing a placebo effect from a scent they've been conditioned to fear, and we're not blowing smoke up their ass. ;)
And yet, this tradition will be attempted again and again, regardless of the reality shown by science. It's just sort of fun to try!

Thanks for posting. We like this study because it's easy to read and very relatable to real life. The take-home message is easy to understand: hotbox really does get you high, but smoking outdoors or in a different room isn't going to get someone else high unless they're literally mouth-to-mouth breathing the exhale haha.

We had a giant hotbox downtown Vancouver in 2015!

Very interesting. Ive always thought hot boxing wasn't worth the effort. The only time that is was on the table was in my younger days, and smelling like cannabis was a sure way to get in trouble. Thanks for post!

Haha, nice one. We didn't have anything like that in Canada. We'd just have an extra set of clean clothes to change into, some perfume and eye drops haha.

I must disagree... once upon a time, in my youth (circa 1998) the weed was weighing in at about 2% THC... one bowl could last you an entire night, in full comfort and allowing you to retain competence for an entire 6 hour session of Dungeons & Dragons, World of Darkness, or the RPG of your choice... Three bowls, and the whole room was fried by 5am, which sucked for SLA games, but otherwise was still fun and good...
Now is not 1998... I gave up cannibas not because I wanted too, but because the shit that is commonly available on the streets nowadays, for $10 no less (if you got a quality hookup) is 8-12%.... That is borderline Weapons Grade weed. The THC content is so high now that the only way I can enjoy a quiet night is to drop 2-3 flakes in a cigarette maker with a load of regular smoking tobacco... Effectively, I'm just smoking a cigarette..
And it will blow me out of my gourd. A full bowl, of this shit? My old smoking buddies, hardcore fully encultured boys with a hefty tolerance, can't even get through a session of Overwatch after one to two hits... It's just too goddamn strong nowadays... due to the potency-race that has been created by the War on Drugs, this shit is approaching dangerous levels.. It has gone too far.
And there's no damn way that the drug cartels are going to intentionally step-down their product out of social concern. They want money, like any corporation.
The only way to deal with this, in any effective method, is full-scale legalization. I'm not saying this because I'm in favour of a nation of stoned-out potheads (far from it) but because if, and only if it is fully legalized, can it be properly regulated... There will always be those who want to buy the hard shit, but the weed that is commonly available will be of a safe variety, and folks like myself, who just want an easy buzz, won't have to roll the dice everytime they make a buy. It will be safe, again.
And that's just how I feel.

Making your own edibles makes it easier to regulate doses. Here's my favorite recipe....

Bah... got so busy preaching that I forgot my point. One night I and my ex-roomie sparked up a bowl the commonly available shit in a room with a total noob... and she got completely wasted.. She was so giddy, and silly, and she didn't know why... And my friend and I winked at each other in agreement to just play along like nothing was out of the ordinary. It was really cute. <3

Any studies on contact highs, Katie? 😎

I found a recent study that shows vaping indoors in a hospital setting does not lead to contact high of nurses or staff (based blood level before the legal cut off). Other than that hotbox is the only contact high found; it hasn't been found by vaping indoors or smoking outdoors, only smoking indoors. The smaller the room and the danker and more plentiful the bud, the greater the high.

That certainly taps down some of the FUD floating around before and after legalization. Thanks for sharing, Katie!
