Nova Scotia Announces Only 9 Retail Cannabis Stores

in cannabis •  7 years ago  (edited)

Nova Scotia announced nine locations of retail cannabis stores this week. Some are questioning the low number and geographic distribution of stores. The province will also offer home delivery via online ordering, which could make up for the lack of retail locations. Adults age 19 or older may also grow up to four cannabis plants at home for personal use under the law.

Cannabis To Be Sold Only In Government-Run Stores

The provincial liquor commission in Nova Scotia is in charge of administering cannabis legalization in the province. Like liquor, cannabis will be sold in government-run stores. Unlike most provinces, Nova Scotia plans to sell cannabis in the same buildings as their current liquor sales.

Here are the announced locations:

  • Amherst – 126 South Albion St.
  • Dartmouth – 650 Portland St.
  • Lower Sackville – 752 Sackville Dr.
  • New Glasgow – 610 East River Rd.
  • Sydney River – 95 Keltic Dr.
  • Truro – 6 Court St.
  • Yarmouth – 104a Starrs Rd.
  • Halifax – 3601 Joseph Howe Dr.
  • Halifax – 5540 Clyde St. (cannabis only)

Colocation with liquor sales goes against federal recommendations for cannabis sales. Eight of Nova Scotia's nine cannabis locations will have liquor and cannabis sales in the same building.

Why Only Nine Stores?

Those nine locations are apparently meant to serve the entire province, which has a lot of people saying they need more locations. New Brunswick opened 20 store locations to serve its smaller population. There are also no retail stores in Annapolis Valley or anywhere in the south of the province, even though 25% of Nova Scotians live in those areas.

Should Nova Scotia open more cannabis stores or is nine stores enough for a population of about a million? How does it compare to where you live?

I am just happy if it is legal to grow it!

Yeah, that will be OK everywhere in Canada come July! Here in WA, growing is not allowed except by those with a medical recommendation. Most other US states with recreational legalization allow growing in some amount.

i expect property prices will suddenly rise around those stores - I want in! you guys are really lucky.

@olyup Thanks for sharing this, I follow the Canadian MJ market quite extensively and write about it www.investinmj.com, I missed this story about how many stores will be opened in Nova Scotia. That is not nearly enough, but I think most provinces will not have enough stores come July. This is why the black market and online sales will continue to thrive in for some time still.
