I've been thinking about trying to get a job in the cannabis industry. The main attraction of moving half way across the country a year ago was that Oregon had legalized the use of recreational cannabis. To be honest, I don't even use frequently. I've only been to a few the plethora of local dispensaries a half a dozen times in the past year. I'll go in, get some kind of edible I haven't had yet, and get a couple of pre-rolls and that will last a couple of months.
I've spent my life working either in restaurants or in some sort of production factory. 75% of the places I have worked I have quickly made my way to management. From area leader or supervisor, even to general manager for 7+ years. As I am now in my mid 30s, I'm finding that I want to get into an industry that I enjoy. I think the movement to legalize medicinal cannabis is one of the greatest movements of out lives. An untold amount of ailments, both physical and mental/emotional, are being treated successfully with drugs that are easy to produce and physically less harmful and addictive.
What I'm looking for is some sort of idea of how to get my foot in the door. I think I'd ultimately be interested in managing a store, but before I make such a large decision I want to learn as much as I can. I thought about learning how to trim, as that will allow me to enter part time and earn $15-20 an hour or up to $140 per pound processed.
For anybody that is or has been a budtender, how did you like it? What kind of information should you know, other than the laws, and different strains/hybrids and their normal effects?
Having been out of the scene for quite a while other than casual smoking, I'm afraid I'm going to go in thinking I know more than I actually do. In an industry that is growing rapidly it's easy to feel overwhelmed with the amount of information out there, and I'm only at the beginning of my search.
Any resources or stories of first hand experience would be super appreciated.
I also live in Oregon and feel very strongly about the movement to legalize cannabis. I don't work in the industry (although I'd love to) but take cannabis regularly to help treat pain associated with chronic illness. I know that in Oregon you'll need to get a card through the OLCC to work in the industry but from what I understand it's not too difficult. I think starting there and researching whats popular in the market are good places to start. Good luck!

Thanks Terri, might as well just apply for the permit now. I don't think they expire for five years so it can't hurt.
