Outdoor Growing Results And Cannabinoid Testing

January seems to be a great month to finally bring some closure to our first outdoor grow.

The 2018 summer was the best outdoor growing season that we’ve experienced in the last decade in our area.

This is according to folks who’ve been into growing for more than 3 decades, in the same geographical area.

All my old-school grower friends have been quick to make sure that I understand this. I think that they just don’t want me to think that I’ll be achieving the same yield results or better year over year.

Little Miss” Don’t be getting use to pulling multiple pounds off of a single plant. We all got lucky this year, including you.”

The message was:

If you set your expectations properly, you (potentially) will not be disappointed.

Work with averages and if you produce more than 1/2 a pound to 3/4 of a pound per plant, consider that a successful grow and harvest, done well.

Duly noted.

I realize that I can’t do anything about the conditions that Mother Nature brings to the table but I can do something about the super-cropping techniques that I use and the nutrients that I choose to feed with.

Gone are the days of simply scattering some seeds in soil in the month of May and returning at the end of October to see what Mother Nature did all on her own.

In addition to tabulating crop yields by dried weight, I also decided to have 3 of the strains we grew, professionally analyzed.

I took dried herb into a lab for testing.

(Take note of the level, this little nugget is trimmed to.)

The lab uses an analyzer that was designed by Sage Analytics. It measures both THC and CBD content and each test costs approximately $50 CAD.

More information about the testing equipment can be found by following this link (below):

This year, we grew 5 strains that contained THC and I decided to test 3 of them.

One of the strains I chose to test, was a strain that originally came from Jamaica.

I named it Short Rick.

Even though I cropped her, she still grew to be over 9’ tall and was a great producer.

Nothing “short” about her at all.

As a joke, I named her after the person who gave me the seeds because he told me to expect a short plant.

B6E0ADDC-DFF5-4BCE-9BFC-9ED455B6F772.jpeg

As you can see, Short Rick came in at 15.9% THC.

I also tested a strain called Creamy Caramel and it came in at 17.7 %THC.

In the photo (above) you can see what Creamy Caramel looked like.

The last strain tested was Purple Tangie and it came in at 15.8 THC.

She was a looker.

Awe, Such fond memories as we sit in the deep freeze of a very cold, winter.

The lab had a few other comments:

They told me that none of our herb contained any visible mould, or detected mould when it was observed under UV light.

E8AFFA42-6D83-464F-ACFE-B797C9EA78D4.jpeg

It also didn’t have any mites which they said was very desirable because mites were a real problem with outdoor grows in 2018, in our area.

The lab suggested that they felt my test results would have come in with greater percentages if I had done a better job trimming. (Good to know for future tests.)

At any rate, now that I have these test results, I know that I am fully capable of producing my own viable medicine and I’ll now be able to calculate THC levels in the edibles that I make.

Excellent post, lovely photos!! <3 Resteemed :))
We wanted to mention that we think a lot of growers "overtrim" their samples that go to the lab. Anything leafy, no matter how frosty, probably isn't as rich in cannabinoids as the bud. It's kinda cheating, but not really, so if you want higher cannabinoid numbers for some reason, that's one way to do it. Another is to just keep getting better and better at what you do! Clearly you have many skills and gardening cannabis is one of them.

Thank you @vantocan. Your words carry weight and I am humbled.
We are helping others to grow their own medicine. It was important to me to know how our genetics stacked up and understand what we are growing. My goal now, is to save genetics and share where ever I can. It’s so important. I can see the writing on the wall, with synthetics which will provide a frequency interface with 5G. Not good.
Save Non-GMO Seed!
I can’t yell that loud enough.

Yes yes yes yes! Thank you so much!! <3

10 minutes into the video, they talk about frequency changes using synthetic cannabis that interface with the ability to control the minds of the masses. 5G will broadcast the frequency and thought patterns and emotions will be completely manipulated. Yikes!
If true, explains why governments are changing their laws and switching to their version of legalization. Even if “control” isn’t part of the official agenda, cited shortages of non-GMO cannabis will give justification for synthetics. It’s not good.

We made you this dab to cheer you up despite all the gloomy news!

OMG! You sure know how to put a smile on my face @vantocan!
That's like full on concentrate porn in my world. Hahaha!
#concentrateporn would make a great tag.

Hahaha! My mouth is dry and I am sweating.
Pretty sure that I have Pavlov's dog, beat. :D

Heheh, yessss! We're pleased you enjoyed the #concentrateporn and will look for opportunities to bring more. At least this account would still serve some purpose, without the business aspect we had planned. :) Stay lifted!

Those are some massive freakin trees @rebeccaryan! That tester is awesome. 50$ seems reasonable. But the price tag on the tester itself is nuts. 23k. holy moly.

Hahaha! They were epic examples @bluntsmasha! I so miss looking outside and seeing those amazons. Got some wee girls on the grow, so come May, hopefully all the snow will be gone and I'll transplant their replacements.:)
I hope you are about to escape the snow (if you haven't already) to Jamaica...
Yeah, it's an investment for sure...but equipment that I trust is accurate and recognized due to its pharmaceutical lineage. It's not so great that it costs so much and that it doesn't test for more cannabinoids and terpenes.

Bleh, no I haven't been able to get away, at least we're out of the dreaded -50 windchills from earlier this week. The wife and I had plans to go to Jamaica with a bunch of friends but the group planning failed and we had to kinda put it on the sidelines since I just returned to work.

I have a full spectrum analyzer for infused products called the TCHeck. Its about 500$ but you have to know the percent of THC the cannabis you used has to calculate the Mg/ml.

Come check out the Discord Server sometime soon, things are really growing at a crazy rate recently.

Ultra cool Rebecca!! Amazing grow ❤🎶
Congratulations on your awesome success!! Nice start. Will see how the next season goes ✌

Thanks @yogajill! Glad that you got to take a little look. Sprouting our next crop of mothers, currently. No rest for the wicked as the saying goes. Lol!

Hahaha! Enjoy ❤🐦🌻

Fantastic... way to go. I’m doing my 1st indoor grow. High CBD Strain 12% CBD... doing well with a $12 Full Spectrum LED Light.

Cool! Looks like you are going to be into some seed production with that male in your second photo @offgridlife. Are you crossing strains?

All your plant material looks really lush and healthy!

I’m mostly Interested in High CBD strains at the moment. I don’t do well with high THC.... makes me anxious, paranoid, stressed out and CBD reduces all those when I make my own Tea. I am growing all organic and calculate that I could produce several million seeds from 1 male and 1 female plant. I am writing about my Micro Grow over on https://Smoke.io/@offgrid if you are over there

@offgridlife bro wow.. I have been looking for a cheap one that actually works for years been buying them from china for years and they are nothing but pretty coloured lights where do I get this $12 job and does it really work? How many watts is it? I am making in indoor aquaponics system and need it ? Cheer$;)

This one.... works great. Feit Electric - Full Spectrum LED 60W Equivalent for $12.97 https://amzn.to/2TBaFBN #cannabis #growlight #led #garden #growyourown

stunning thanks bud Ill buy it from good ol Jeff Bezos. I am based in South Africa they want to charge me R2300 for one which is around $200 madness. Ill try this one. Cheer$;)

Well it certainly is working for my 4 plants.

Yeah @magnata! My strategy was to grow big, or go home. Especially since the growing conditions were so good in my area. For the most part, with the exception of tornado winds that touched us at the end of August and a rainy October which made choosing a harvest date a little tricky, we did exceptionally well growing trees complete with bark. LOL! We trimmed for weeks. I am not complaining.

Great post @rebeccaryan!

I like how the lab gave you suggestions on ways to increase the potency for future testing. Happy to see you didn't have any mold on your samples. And mid-high teens for THC on those samples, probably means it would be in the 20's when given a dispensary style trim.

Amazing!

Thanks @massmedicinals! Exactly. You’re one of the few who picked up on that interesting detail. @vantocan did too...and pointed out that it’s kind of cheating in a way, to trim so close that the buds look tumbled, just to capture a % or two more on your testing scores.
Sent home to re-trim, liked no grower ever.
Was told.
“Work to that level sweetheart, and $1800 a pound is yours any day of the week.”
Good to know, that my herb could run with the big dogs. ;)

Exactly right @rebeccaryan.

It's actually a big issue. Since lab testing is required, it puts a lot of pressure on all parties. Growers want their product to pass and have the highest results possible. There are many ways to game the system right now.

Sent home to re-trim, liked no grower ever.

LOL!!!!!

Happy Friday!!!
@Massmedicinals

Oh my shattered nerves those trees are incredible WOW amazing .. long time no see my friend I stopped poppin in as you were away for such a while apologies nice to see you back my first pop in for a while. I have just tried growing these from cuttings not sure it will work but try I will, have a lovely evening Cheer$;) x

Hi @craigcryptoking! Great to connect again. Best of luck getting your cuttings to take root! ;)

Thanks a ton my friend Ditto, appreciate that. Have a super cool weekend. .. x

Math Quiz:

If you start with 1 male cannabis plant and 1 female Cannabis plant and allow them to have sex you create 100 new seeds from that single plant.

If you have 4 grow seasons per year ( 3 months) and each female plant produces 100 seeds with 50 females.... how long does it take before you have 1 Billion Cannabis plants?

Math Quiz!?!

LMFAO! Really? @offgridlife Hahaha...let me go take a big dab, chase that with a crowned bowl, followed by some terpene juice and I'll throw in a couple of hot knives just for fun...

Bastard! Do you know that I have an obsessive-compulsive mind, that's driven hard by managing details?
Hahahaha!
I'll get back to you...fuck!

Sorry about all that...l I have an answer posted on my blog.

Ok, these kinds of compounding equations drive me nuts. I actually don't think that I have enough information to calculate this accurately.
The unknown factor is whether the males count as viable plants too.
If I'm only considering females, I'd say that it would take at least 50,000 years.

Nope.... Try 1.2Years...

You'd be looking at 1 female creating 50-female seeds every 3-months ...

1,000,000,000 = 1x50^n where n = number of seasons.

After n = 5 seasons, you'd have ~9.75Million seeds;
After n = 6 seasons, you'd have ~15.63Billion seeds;

when n = 5.29 seasons (if you could have partial seasons) -- you'd hit ~1Billion seeds.

If you can go from seed to flower in 12 weeks (3months) you’d have 4 growing Seasons in one year.... so 5 growing Seasons =1.2years

I am going to try this with my Ruderalis Hybrids. I will send you a few Billion seeds in 1.5 years.

Lol! I wish you success in your hybridization. Saving genetics and making new ones is so important.

"If you have 4 grow seasons per year ( 3 months) and each female plant produces 100 seeds with 50 females.... how long does it take before you have 1 Billion Cannabis plants?"

50 females producing 100 seeds each = 5,000 per grow
5,000 seeds X 4 grows per year = 20,000 seeds per year
20,000 seeds X 50,000 years = 1,000,000,000 seeds
Rebecca is correct.

Nope.

You are forgetting that the 1st set of seeds after 3 months also grow 50 seeds in 3 months...

The Growth formula is Exponential.... it’s like compounding interest... seeds upon seeds upon seeds.

It adds up very fast.

You have one statement

"If you start with 1 male cannabis plant and 1 female Cannabis plant and allow them to have sex you create 100 new seeds from that single plant."

and one question.

"If you have 4 grow seasons per year ( 3 months) and each female plant produces 100 seeds with 50 females.... how long does it take before you have 1 Billion Cannabis plants?"

She answered the question correctly. It adds up to 50,000 years if you follow the question as stated.

Yeah... i should say that you continue to let the males and females have sex.

Dam I got to say these are some amazingly nice looking flowers.

You really did a great job growing them

Have you heard smoke.io yet? It is a great cannabis social network come check us out

Thanks @skylinebuds! It was a great grow. ;)

You are SO fortunate to be able to grow your own cannabis openly. Such robust looking plants. Would love to be able to grow cannabis and distill the oil but we, in Oz are still living in the prohibition era. Maybe in ten years time, we'll catch up. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎

It's been a fight to get to this point @allyinspirit. Canada legalized in October. I am a medical grower and these plants went in the ground in May. We did everything we could to protect them from theft while they grew out in the open for 5 months. This is the first time that I have posted any details about how that particular grow went...it's been 3 months since harvest and it still feels like I am "censoring to protect."

So instead of warding of bugs you have to ward off people. Hadn't thought of that but it's easy to see the lure your garden would have. So unfair that you go to the trouble of planting and someone else comes along and harvests. I wonder how you'll be able to get around that. Leaving a note or sign DO NOT PICK probably won't do it. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎

Most people are use to seeing cannabis growing as tall, more spindly plants. We trained and cropped to achieve the globe shape. It wasn’t until they started to produce long buds that people started to notice. Haha! Well that, and the sweet, skunky diesel aroma which we couldn’t camouflage. ;)

Whatever you are doing produces amazing results! I simply can't wait to be able to grow outdoors here!

There is a story @tamaralovelace, it involves some ancient shit. LOL!
You let me know the moment you can and I'll plan a road trip. ;)

oooh I love a good story LOL. It will likely be two years yet....they have just now gone to bat to remove the ban on smokeable medical...phht! Florida is always about 25 years behind the rest of the world lol.

That is cool that you got them tested, it is nice to know there is no mold, and good job on the no mites! Mold is a real issue where I am at in the Willamette Valley in Oregon, and especially powder mildew. Great looking plants! Congrats on a successful grow and harvest. Much love - Carl

Thanks for your words of encouragement @carlgnash!
We tried to let these plants go as long as we could into the month of October. I really wanted to harvest with the full moon but we decided it was too risky, given the amount of rain-fall and the inability of the dense plant material to dry, at that late stage. We did lose almost a whole plant within 8 hours to powder mildew. Saw it on a branch in the evening , cut that branch off, thought I’ll harvest in the morning, by the time morning came, I’d lost the plant and we just didn’t have enough manpower or hours in the day to try saving her. Worried that it would move through the garden, I sacrificed the plant. Painful but necessary with my still novice level of experience. ;)
