Update: The Cloner Prototype Worked And Roots Grew

in cannabis •  7 years ago

5 weeks ago I started the process of attempting to take clones from my existing garden. I took my first 50, saturated the stems in rooting gel and planted them directly in soil (in small pots).

I succeeded in killing 41.

All was not lost because I learned from this process and 9 of the toughest girls lived.

As a result of the dismal outcome @knarly327 built (what @ganjafarmer shared ) was actually called a deep water culture.

And your system is called deep water culture. I have done it before and it does produce some excellent results. I have a feeling that your next round of cloning is going to be a lot easier.

And I have found that using too much cloning gel actually inhibits rooting.

This is coming from a huge fan of cloning gels... Or was...

I took 50 more clones.

After 3 weeks with continuous bubbling action, a root structure was achieved.

No shit. It surprised the hell out of us too. Considering the bubbler or deep water culture was made with approximately $100 worth of “off the shelf”, readily available components.

If you missed my “how to build a do it yourself bubbler” post, you can find it here:

In the photo (below) you can see what the clones looked like after approximately 14 days in the bubbler.

Yes, there are a lot of yellow leaves, so we haven’t got the moisture level quite right yet, we don’t think.

With the tray lifted (in the photo above) you can see what the roots looked like 7 days ago.

With more established roots, the clones have a much better chance of becoming established and growing into strong plants, themselves.

This is what the root structure looked like after growing for 21 days.

In the photo (above) you can see that the roots have started to grow right through the rock wool planting plugs.

We transplanted all 50 into blue solo cups because the red solo cup had already been filled up and quite frankly gets all the action so I thought it was only fair to give blue a try.

This was added to YouTube by Toby Keith on Oct.10,2011.

Blue, you’re more than fantastic
and you can believe me because I’m not the least bit sarcastic...
when I say it’s all I can do, not to be in love with you. ;D

After cutting 2 drainage slits in the sides, at the bottom of each cup, I filled them half full of soil. Then coiled the roots around before adding more soil.

A blue solo cup that I filled up with Purple Bubba
Then I wrote her name in Sharpie pen and did that again exactly the same way for all ten.

We cloned 5 different strains, 10 of each for a total of 50.

To this, we will add the 9 survivors from my first cloning attempt.

After watering with nutrients the newly transplanted clones were parked under lights in a vegetative staging area. They’ll stay here until we are ready to harvest our current garden in a couple of weeks. This is because we currently don’t have enough room to grow these in vegetative stage and finish our current crop in flower stage, inside. We are about 4 weeks away from the risk of frost becoming a non-issue so it’s too dangerous to plant outside in our area, yet.

With our next gardening we are planning to grow 9 plants inside and the remaining outside during our summer season. This will also let us segregate our grow room into 2 separate rooms.

This will allow us to always have some plants growing in all 3 stages (clones, veg, and flower) at the same time.

Here’s what I have learned and have changed or will be changing:

  • It was very apparent that the clones that had good water bubbling action around them, grew better roots. As a direct result, tube style aeration will replace the 12 inch straight bubblers that proved to be inconsistent. They didn’t give even air distribution.

3B22FB24-5DE7-4373-A26C-C297BF545DEC.jpeg

In the photo (above) you can see a very spindly clone on the right hand side of the photo. It didn’t receive as much aeration as its stronger sister did, beside her.

  • Rooting hormone powder worked better for me than the gel rooting hormone. (Just like @ganjafarmer shared.)

B4B8E1EB-BE6E-44FC-AECF-85C42A3CC859.jpeg

  • I am also going to place the stem of the cutting, closer to the bottom of the planting plug to encourage faster root growth. (You can see in the picture (above) that I placed the stem in the middle of the rock wool plug instead of closer to the bottom.

I welcome your comments and I invite you to follow me on my journey...I’ll be honest it won’t hurt my feelings not to have to handle a blue solo cup for awhile. ;)

Nice job! There is definitely a learning curve when it comes to growing cannabis.

Just a tip - when using the bubbler style 'rapid rooter' you typically want the stem of your cuttings hanging out exposed to a constant misting of water. The way you are doing it now is really no different then leaving them in a tray, in fact I would get roots faster with my method as the drying out of the pellets actually stimulates the roots into looking for water.

Typically the rapid rooters are used with a foam insert type plug which leaves the stalk of your plant exposed to a constant misting of water and lots of oxygen. You could try letting your stem hang a 1/4" out the bottom of the rockwool for speedier root development. You should be getting roots in 7+/- days with a 'bubbler'. I get roots in 10+/- with the method I mentioned above.

The faster you can push roots, the less nutrient deficient your cuttings will be and the faster they will recover and take off with growth.

Keep growing @rebeccaryan!

this is deep water culture cloning not aero cloning. i believe the stems are constantly submerged in water

Yes, once I got the roots to grown, they sat in the water constantly until I transplanted the rooted cuttings. ;)
Thanks for your comment @legalcanada!

Hmmm... seems to go against what I know about stimulating root development, not to say it can't work well. Honestly, the only time I've had cuttings die in the past couple years is when my friend (who was watching my garden while I was away for 3 days) watered the cubes "cause they were drying out". Being in an over wet environment killed 11 out of 12 cuttings. Typically I have close to 100% success with little to no leaf yellowing using my method.

Perhaps combining a couple of my tips with this method would improve the time.

  • Use powder & gel rooting hormone
  • Defoliate a little more
  • Maybe use a dome for the first 3-4 days

Just some thoughts. Happy growing!

generally there is no rockwool cube, they use neoprene pucks which only hold the stem in place while the tip is constantly submerged in aerated water for bubble cloners, aerocloners are similar but the stems are misted instead of submerged. some people use a bubble cloner like an aerocloner, by having the stems above the water in the popping bubbles, but that's not how they're intended

I got ya... makes sense.

Thanks for your great reply. I upvoted your comment at 100% because I missed your post about cloning when it was still active and because the content that you have shared is valuable and relevant to my post's subject matter. Thank you for this help @jayanarchon! I really appreciate it.
I will keep improving upon my techniques with each garden that I grow and with the guidance from yourself and other experienced growers.

Wow, what a compliment! Thanks @rebeccaryan! I will have much more to come.

That's the main thing, keep growing and learning! Combining techniques from different sources can lead to great results.

Thanks again for the promotion and upvote!

Good job! Cloning can be hard in the beginning! I took some clones a few days ago and was thinking about making a post about it--I also use a homemade bubbler made from a small lunchbox sized ice chest. The yellowing of your clones might be from too much light, I would raise your light up--I use a 20 watt cfl about 2 feet away--too much light will make them take longer too root also.

Awesome @chriskautzer! I love that you re-purposed a cooler for this job!
Fantastic. Thanks for adding value to my post. I really appreciate it.
Good to know about the light...I'm still working on getting the water and the lighting just right for my cloning activities.

We learn as we grow and here we can say that we learn and watch them grow :D

This has definitely got my interest. I think I have heard of these bubblers before. I would like to try this with softwood cuttings from various fruit bushes and trees.

It should work. I also think that you might be able to get cuttings from tomatoes to root that way too.
The link in this post shows how @knarly327 (my husband) built this one.
We are going to change the aerated rock sticks that we used to a tube style aerator line so that we can deliver consistent air bubbles to the roots. Our cuttings that missed getting good aeration because the air bubbles weren't reaching them consistently enough almost lost all their leaves entirely. The only reason we hung onto them is because they did still manage to grow roots and we thought we'd take our chances and try and resurrect them. (I find sometimes those are the best plants/trees because they are tough as nails, if they survive.)

Yeah, thanks. I checked it out and bookmarked it. Building one would be a great winter project. Our hands will be full this year with the house build.

I wish you cloned a few without gel or such like. Just to test the gel. I saw on YT a test and there was zero difference

Anyway awesome to have your own cutted clones.. A skill i would love to master one day.

Goodluck

Rebecca
That is a lot of work. I can see that you are going to be very busy over the next few days/weeks.
What you have written and have shown to us is very good information.
I venture to says that less than one (1) out of a hundred (100) people will ever get to use this wonderful information.
Me being one of them. Ugh on all that.
Nevertheless. The information is here on blockchain essentially forever.
So, nothing is lost.
We will all be watching with interest over the coming weeks/months.
Thank you so much for what you do and have done for us.
I/we all appreciate it so much. Who knows what the future holds for all of us?

Francis

Believe me, all these experiments that you are doing on the plants and trying to treat them are very wonderful. Greetings to you for all your efforts. Thank you @rebecca .

I see you have everything you need to grow a clonal plant from clones. I wish you luck.

This is an awesome post, I will keep this in mind when I am able to grow my own one day.

success make another success, 9 come out from 50. this acheivements indicate about right track of cannbis water gel cloning.

great to share ..homesteding..
great story..
resteem done

Yes, the clones are not very healthy, I hope they get stronger, take care of them. Thank you for the information.

Really you are comming to us with a great job .
In steem platform you post with several types of tree.
You also describe how it grow and work.
I also appretiate it.
I think trees are our natural friend .
It help us everymoment indirectly.
But we can't understand for the reason it works out of our usual eye sight.
Btw i want give a great thanks to you.
And also thanks for the post @rebeccaryan
Waiting for your next post .

it is cannabis tree. marijuana!😄

By the way this is gardening topic awesome article for every garden lovers.

A very impressive work and the growth of cannabis within such asparagus growths is interesting
The growth of hashish in this wonderful form is a matter of stopping me How was obtained from the carrot and planted in the house is a large is from a well or is not a condition Gosha large enough to put the bosom only in the soil in the normal way

I wish you more growth in everything
