Thought on working at Spotify

Imagine that you love music.

Listening to music, attending concerts, paying your favourite artists for what they do.

Then imagine working at Spotify.

You get a chance to help the artists that you love.

Here's the kicker:

You will make a lot more money per month than the majority of artists make from their Spotify payouts in years.

Now imagine working at Spotify.

Today, artists have to tour tirelessly because they earn very little money from streaming and album sales.

Some artists benefit, but very few.

This is a modern definition of wage slavery, especially since Spotify is a capitalistic company where the people at the top earn far more money than most people on Earth.

Naturally, the above is not only valid for Spotify, but for all capitalistic companies that parasite off the living.

Well, you dont have to use Spotify at all; Loads of other options to sell music. Get the majority of musicians do the same and Spotify goes bankrupt.

I don't use Spotify. The problem isn't that; the problem is how the work, almost monopolise music and how we must spread knowledge about what they do, how that affects musicians and the rest of us.

In anything - also in music - how to execute business is key which involves much more than the product. In music (and other arts) the consumer wants simple and easy discovery, centralised services, all-in-one. That is the success of Spotify. Its not new, radio was the method of discovery of music for the mass in the past (and still is for many people). A whole system was/is build around that medium with pluggers pushing music to a radio channel every hour (costing a lot of money and all). I personally think artists will have to face the facts and build their revenue streams around live performing. Music distribution is (just) a marketing tool, eg to get to the attention of the public as well as the event/party promoter.

'How to execute business' should be bar capitalism, or greed will be the deciding factor. I live without greed where art is concerned, except for when it definitely benefits the artist whose work I consume, and to an ok extent, the provider.

Spotify is still just a mass-marketing tool where the workers—i.e. the musicians—are used to promote the leaders of companies like Spotify.

That is one view. Spotify is also a platform that gives artists exposure, simply because so many users/listeners are using spotify. But, yeah, you dont have to use it as an artists, thats fine.

I disagree in saying Spotify gives artists exposure. Spotify is not exposing people to stuff based on what could provide them with stuff like happiness, what could make them explore new worlds, or what might whet their appetites in other ways, musically speaking; Spotify wants you to listen to what brings them the most money. That's it. Bottom limit. Believe me when I write that Spotify is a money-grabbing capitalistic company from top to bottom, in that sense. They don't want people to listen for joy. They want people to listen but mostly to stuff that makes Spotify the top dollar.

Again, it's important to know that Spotify is one of the companies that are trying to make songwriters earn less from royalties. That is saying everything.

In essence, they don't care about artists. To Spotify, artists are humans while they are vampires; what does that make their users?
