If you can see your way past the "We hate Republicans"-style WaPo headline and the obvious anti-GOP bias of the reporters, this article actually contains a number of important points and quotes about the very different ways in which Democrats and Republicans view the events of Jan. 6th.

Was it an armed insurrection? An attempted overthrow of the government? An act of treason? An act of terrorism? Was the attack organized and coordinated? Did anyone direct it? Could it have been nipped in the bud by the Capitol Police and other law enforcement agencies?

As professional political animals, Democratic and Republican senators and congressmen primarily view Jan. 6 through the prism of partisan politics. We should no more trust Republican efforts to minimize the seriousness of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol than we should trust Democratic efforts to maximize it. Both sides see potential gains or setbacks stemming from how the public perceives Jan. 6.
