Genesis wowed us once again at this year's New York Auto Show, which opened to the public on April 15 at the Javits Center. Just as it did in 2017, the fast-growing luxury sub-brand of Korean industrial group Hyundai demonstrated a stunning concept car that helps the novice automaker continue to define its unique and attractive design aesthetics.

But unlike five years ago, this isn't yet another car in a (literally) rising sea of gasoline-powered SUVs. Instead, Hyundai's Genesis X Speedium Coupe is a uniquely battery-powered two-door and four-passenger coupe, with a Fastback roof giving it an almost wagon-like appearance. The name is inspired by the racetrack in the South Korean city of Engi and the brand's aspirations for motorsport glory.

Genesis chose to reveal the vehicle off-site, not on the Convention Center floor. It didn't have to go far, however, as Hyundai hosts the center of its serene brand experience, Genesis House, just a mile from downtown and along the Hudson River.

The automaker wasn't alone in skipping official activities at the show. Most luxury car brands refrained from attending, including Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, Cadillac, Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Rolls Royce and Volvo. This is one of the first public auto shows to take place since the pandemic, and it continues to show the trend of premium automakers choosing to forgo mass-market events, opting instead to spend money in a more targeted manner in order to reach elite customers.

"This is not a show car - it's a look at our design processes as we explore ideas for the next wave of electric vehicles," Genesis chief creative officer Luc Dunkerulc said in a statement.
The concept - like many dream cars - may or may not go into production. "This vehicle is an open moment in Genesis' journey towards designing electric vehicles of the future," said Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis' chief creative officer, in a statement. "This isn't a show car - it's a look at our design processes as we explore ideas for the next wave of electric vehicles, one that includes Genesis."

However, Genesis has stated that its entire lineup will be all-electric by 2030, and has teased production cars of the past with coupe-like shades. So this wonderful dream car may come to fruition in our future reality.
