Our third vehicle spotlight is on a Luxury Classic that will even turn heads from onlookers at the Woodward Dream Cruise, a spectacular Red 1960 Model Year Cadillac Eldorado Convertible.
When you view these photos keep in mind that only 1,285 of this Make / Model were built, and only 99 of them (which this is one of them) had bucket seats.
This true classic is meticulously maintained down to the smallest details, and while most people would be terrified to take it on the road in order to avoid any possible accidents, here it is to feast upon and appreciate the deco-art styling that Cadillac’s were known for in this particular era.
This specific vehicle comes with a 390 CID (3.9L) Engine, and automatic transmission, along with other cutting-edge options at that time like cruise control, and bucket seats.
Keep in mind that this vehicle is a 1960 Model, which meant Automotive Designers had to start working on 2-3 years prior (in the late 1950’s), just when the first man in Space made history, Satellites like Sputnik were launched, and Space exploration represented the new frontier for science.
It was no wonder then, that Aircraft, Rocket Ships, and even Science Fiction Movies, had such a great influence on the shape, styling, and contours of automobiles of this era - - so that you literally would feel like you were sitting in a cock-pit of a jet aircraft, ready to blast-off. This aircraft & rocket ship influence not only affected the exterior sheet metal, rear-tail fins, chrome trim, and exterior lighting, it permeated into every facet of the interior including the dashboard, seating, and even the engine compartment as well.
Consequently, vehicle attributes such as Bucket Seats, were offered in Luxury automobiles during this era based on the single seat of an aircraft, replacing the stodgy-straight front row seat that came on premium automobiles prior to this time period, and which still lives with us today. It’s no wonder then, that one of Oldsmobile’s Engine slogan’s for so many years afterwards were “Put a Rocket in Your Pocket”.
While it was obvious to everyone that automobiles could not fly, at a minimum automakers wanted to provide customers the illusion or possibility that these machines were just one magical step away from becoming air born, and become your magical flying-carpet to uncharted territory.
At the time this photo was taken this classic gem was owned by Mike H. (last name not displayed for privacy) - - Mike, many thanks for sharing and showing your treasured vehicle with us!
So buckle up, and get ready to blast-off and go cruising in this jaw-dropping Cadillac Eldorado rocket-ship!
