1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale

in car •  6 years ago

In Monterey (California, US) this summer, another great auction though RM Sotheby's with this beautiful 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale, coachwork by Bertone (my last post about the Lamborghini Miura P400 SV, it's also a design by the Italian company). No price has been set yet for one of most desirable Italian sports cars of its era but to give an idea, in March, a 1964 model was sold for $US 132,000 by Gooding & Company.

History of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale was produced between 1959 and 1966 with a design by Franco Scaglione, Italian automobile coachwork designer from Bertone, who also had penned the Alfa Romeo BAT (3 cars were built: the BAT 5 in 1953, the BAT 7 in 1954, and the BAT 9 in 1955). What is BAT ?

It was a design studies of the mid-1950's, Bertone Aerodynamica Technica, in order to reduce the drag coefficient. The Sprint Speciale remained essentially unchanged throughout production (only 1,366 coachbuilt sprint speciales), with later-series cars benefiting from the larger 1600 engine, front disc brakes, and suspension improvements.

Beautiful restoration with this dark blue painting over soft grey interior with a red carpet.

When I was writing the post, I was looking for the adjective to describe the Giuletta, I didn't find anything. Funky it's perfect...

Quirky is another one, it’s almost classic spaceship esq shaped.
