Everyone talks about carbs- carbohydrates like they're the boogie men of the nutrition facts list. But like anything else, carbs are great in moderation. I thought today we could take some of the mystery out of the carb.
Now remember, I'm not a health care professional. I'm not a dietitian or a nutritionist. I'm just a person who has done some research and thought I'd share. I'm going to talk in overly simple terms in how things affect me. I'd suggest you do your own research in addition to these bits. Eat the way that fits best with you and your health goals.
Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, let's dive in.
Essentially, carbs are starches and sugars found in foods. Starches are in things like breads, pastas, potatoes. Sugars can be found in fruit, vegetables, drinks, etc. Meats are generally free of both. Starches are broken down in the body into sugars. And sugar are...ya know...sugars.
When sugars are released into your blood stream, your body sounds an internal alarm and your pancreas sends out insulin to regulate the sugar. Balance is key. As a Type 2 diabetic, too much sugar throws me out of whack and insulin is a problem for me.
That's why I have to regulate my carbohydrates so much. For me, carbs are not my friend. They're not BFFs. We can't go hangout at the mall. And as such, I had to find a health path that would work with me. Foods like breads, pastas, and starches are on my "don't" list. We can talk more about the foods that are on "do" list another time.
Now you and your body could be a totally different. Some people thrive on a high carb diet with low carb or somewhere in-between. But that's a little bit about carbs.
