So, today we're going to talk about highway driving and try to give you some highway driving tips. We'll start with what is usually the most difficult part for a beginner, and that would be actually getting on the highway. The reason that's more difficult is because the cars that are already on the highway are going at a greater speed than you are merging in.

This is where the use of the lane to merge becomes most important. You have to use that lane to build up your speed and try to get your speed up so that then it would be easier to blend in with the cars that are already on the highway. So, you don't want to come to the end of that merge lane and then stop. At that point it will be very difficult to get on. You have to use the merging lane to accelerate, build up your speed, and keep checking your mirror on the left and turning your head to make sure you've got a good safe distance to merge onto. Then, when that occurs you move onto the highway.

Once you get on the highway my recommendation is that the best lane to usually drive in would be the middle lane. The left lane is generally used for passing. The problem with staying in the right lane is that you've got to deal with those cars getting on the highway at every single exit. So, my recommendation is stay in the middle lane.

The speed is greater on the highway which means that things can happen much more quickly, so that space is so important in highway driving. You need to have space in front of the car and behind the car, to the left and right at all times.

If you're going to make a lane change you're going to do so by putting your signal on and indicating the way you want to make that pass whether it be to the right or to the left. Then you're going to look and make sure it's real safe to do so. Then move your car from one lane to the other.

When is a good time to get back into the lane that we came from? The answer to that is that we need to see the vehicle that we passed in our rear view mirror. When you can see that entire vehicle in the rear view mirror it is then okay to move back to that right lane.

So, those are some tips that you can use if you want to have some safe, comfortable highway driving.
