#CareerAdvice - How to cope up with a new job fast

in careeradvice •  7 years ago

Moving to a new job may seem very exciting at its front, but it can be tough as it comes. What happens is, you usually enter greener pasture (or perfect world) in mind. But then, as the days begin to unravel, those dream bubbles start to burst (sometimes at the rate unimaginable). The worst thing is, this can be too overwhelming. Too overwhelming that it starts to drain your spirit out.

Now, coming from a recent personal experience, I'm sharing out some of the ways I'm doing to help cope up with the new environment. Of course, we want to go over the process as fast as we can, so I hope these suggestions will do the trick.

how to cope with your new job

1. Manage your expectations

Disappointments usually come when something or someone fails to meet our expectations. The same is true for a new work. We'll be in a phase where all the "positives" of the new job are extra-emphasized. Everything will look extremely enticing enough to make us jump ship - fast. The problem is we are so high up in the clouds that everything becomes so blurry.

Soon enough we'll be pulled to the ground, and we'll begin to see reality. It might not be as bad, but for others, they might end up being "slapped" on the face. And the things you are avoiding, might actually be present in your new job, but we were just too "naive" to notice. Our excitement obscured our judgment. Hence, before taking the plunge, assess well the new company. Now, if you think it's already too late, you can still adjust and cope by managing your expectations, and accepting the situation.

2. Stay away from comparison

When we move to a new job, we usually tend to compare it to our old job/s and worse to those of our friends. Stop. We'll just stress ourselves out. First off, previous jobs are already in the past, let's not allow them to negatively affect us in the present. Second, the job of our friends are outside our control. Let's not waste energy on something we don't have any control over. We can rather use this to inspire us, but when there's more envy than inspiration, let's stop.

Comparison also shifts our attention to what we don't have which then prevents us to enjoy what we DO have. Let's not waste the gifts we have today by being too obsessed with something non-existent. Each job is unique on its own, let's just see and embrace the bright side of it.

3. Maintain a positive attitude

Motivational speakers share that there are two areas in life. One that is within our sphere of influence, and the other beyond.

There are things we don't have control over, but we can control what we'll feel (or do) about them. Hence, instead of being swallowed up by disappointment, frustration and regret over the new job, just choose to look at the positives. I'm a believer of the saying that we can learn from anything that happens in our life, be it good or bad. It all boils down to where we'll focus our attention.

4. Seek ideas from co-workers

We also tend to exaggerate when things get off-tangent with our expectations. Sometimes, we hit the panic button too early. Hence, it helps talking with your new co-workers and ask them more about the culture, the workload patterns, the soft spots of bosses and etc. The objective is to immediately get a good grasp of the environment. It's usually the fear of the unknown that swallows us up. Hence, we have idea o things to come, we can have enough preparation.

5. Let go, and move on

We made a choice, so for now let's stick with it. The faster we move on, and let the new environment sink in, the faster we adjust. Let's give ourselves a chance to experience something new. If after 6 months things still don't turn out as good, then we can re-evaluate our options and career goals. What's important is we keep learning and keep moving forward

Jobs take up 40 to 80 percent of our time daily, and so we owe it to ourselves to make things run as smooth as possible for us. Hence, the sooner we can adjust well, the better it is for us. After all, it's a gift we can give to ourselves as an employee.

Day 18 of 30

I subjected myself to a 30-day challenge (read more). I honestly failed in my daily posting, and I wasn't able to catch up this weekend. Nevertheless, I'm finishing the race I started. This challenge has done wonders in making my mind creative, so in that sense I find success in it.
