There are a lot of specialist jobs out there that require you to have a degree.
But... especially in care, there are a lot of career opportunities available that require little to no higher education. Here are the top 4 care home jobs to apply to if you don’t have a degree.
Driver or transport manager
Responsibilities:
• Transporting people to and from daycentres, hospital appointments and other outings
• Planning routes
• Helping people to get on and off the vehicle safely
• Performing regular vehicle checks and ensuring the vehicle is clean
Skills needed:
• Awareness of those who need care and support
• Good communication
• Being reliable and trustworthy
• Coping well under pressure or in an emergency
• Good organisational skills and familiarity with the local area
Qualifications/experience:
A full driving license and possibly a category D licence depending on the vehicle you’re driving. It might also be useful to have some prior experience in a similar role.
Maintenance
Responsibilities:
• Gardening
• Painting and decorating
• Electrical repairs
• Plumbing
• Repairs and fittings
• Doing health and safety inspections
Skills needed:
• English
• Good mathematical skills
• Digital and employability skills
• Awareness of the issues faced by those who need care and support such as older or disabled people
• Carpentry, plumbing, decorating or electrical repair skills
• Health and safety knowledge
Qualifications/experience:
It might be useful to have some prior experience working in a similar role or a qualification in at least one aspect of maintenance, as well as showing good English and number skills such as GCSE A-C because this may be requested by some employers.
Cook or kitchen assistant
Responsibilities:
• Developing healthy and balanced meals with the input of residents
• Being aware of religious and cultural backgrounds and how it impacts residents’ dietary requirements
• Monitoring kitchen stocks so you know when to order more supplies
• Ensuring high standards of cleanliness and hygiene are met
Skills needed:
• English
• Good mathematical skills
• Digital and employability skills
• Team work
• Problem solving
• The ability to treat people with dignity
• Good listening and observational skills
• Awareness of the challenges faced by those who need care and support
Qualifications/experience:
It might be useful to have some previous experience in the catering industry but if you’re going to work as a kitchen assistant no prior qualifications are required.
If you’re interested in career progression up to Kitchen manager level then you will definitely need a catering qualification such as a professional chef diploma, BTEC national certificate in hospitality supervision or an advanced chef diploma. These qualifications can be completed whilst in a job if you would prefer.
Housekeeping
Responsibilities:
• Creating a comfortable and welcoming environment for residents
• Making beds and doing laundry
• Keeping records of housekeeping stocks, as well as ordering supplies
• The general upkeep of communal areas and bedrooms to make sure they are kept clean and tidy
Skills needed:
• English
• Good mathematical skills
• Digital and employability skills
• Awareness of the challenges faced by those who need care and support
• Knowledge of health and safety in the workplace
• Have good attention to detail
• Be able to cope under pressure or in an emergency
• Good organisational skills
Qualifications/experience:
You don’t need a qualification to become a housekeeper, but it may be good to have done a similar job role.
