Today I bring to you this Moke from the all British day in Brisbane Australia.
This Moke pictured here was.built in Australia and would have been about a 1979-1982 model. Moke's Were built from 1964-1994 with production starting in Britain and finishing 1968 and production starting in Australia in 1966 with all Mokes being made here from 1968-1982. And Moke production was transferred to Portugal and started in 1985-1989. After Portugal production stopped Rover car's sold the Moke rights to Cagiva in Italy. Cargiva makers of Ducati, Moto Morini and Husqvarna motorbikes and VM diesel engines. Rover was still supplying mechanical components to Cagiva to build the Moke. Cagiva production was from 1991-1994.
Australia made many improvements to the Moke over the years. The fitting of 13 inch wheel diameter replacing the 10 inch wheels this gave the Moke much needed higher ground clearance and was used by the Australian Army and air force in various rolls. Also fitting larger engines from the original 848cc to 1098cc and up to the 1275cc motor with disk brakes on the front wheels. The Moke and Mini were developed together in the late 1950s.
These cars are awesome fun to drive. I used to take mine off road and down the beach etc. The last Australian built Mokes from 1979-1982 had full dipped galvanized body's so they are very popular now as they have very little chance of rusting. For a few years the Moke was Australia's most exported car going to some 69 countries I believe. So much more to the Moke story I may cover that another time.
Thanks for following along with me on this series from the all British day.
