The Mercedes-Benz 600 still stands tall, in history, among the most luxurious automobiles ever produced. Quoting the popular talk-show host and now a car collector, Jay Leno, he said this car was produced without cost in mind, meaning the engineers were given unlimited budget.
The Mercedes Benz company didn't dwell on reducing cost of materials or the affordability. A total of 2677 units of this car were produced from 1963 to 1981. They comprise of the following units.
There are some variants with power window separating the front seats from the rear bench seat. While others are 4-door limousine on a longer wheelbase featuring two rear-facing seats and a rear bench seat.
Others are two coupés made, one as a gift for Dr. Uhlenhaut, the man that designed the car. Then one funeral coach (hearse).
It is a luxury car in its own class. When you look at the range of perks common to modern day luxury sedans, the Mercedes Benz 600 has it all and so much more.
Take for instance power seats, windows, trunks, and doors, the Mercedes 600 had all those features powered by a hydraulics system (flowing at 300 psi) and a supple pneumatic suspension. which as Jay Leno puts it is expensive and can be difficult to maintain.
You got to have one of those staunch Mercedes Engineers to restore one to its factory specs.
THE ENGINE
This luxury limousine packs a 6.3 liter v8 engine producing a staggering 300 horsepower. In those days, those horses are within the ranks of a few super fast cars. It is like packing a Maybach with Bugatti's 1000+ horsepower today.
Though out-shined by the modern day glitz and glamour, the Mercedes Benz 600 was back in the day one the pinnacles of automobile luxury. You got to be loaded to have one. And it is why the MB 600 was mostly owned by celebrities and dictators alike.
