Interesting to look ok at these two, the E46 doesn’t really look old or last gen and has aged extremely well. The often mocked Chris Bangle was actuall head of design at BMW when the E46 was released and approved this final concept which only underlines his skills and foresight.

Whats immediately obvious is the departure from minimalist and clean lines that BMWs of the past used to create that sophisticated yet agile elegance and how rash the newer car with all the creases and ducts appears next to it.

Mind you the left car is an M3 and the right a regular 3 series but still both being black 4 door sedans there is a definitive understatement in the design language on the older car that is simply absent on the newer model - with or without M Fenders.

Some things however never change such as the signature L shape of the rear lights albeit much wider nowadays and the infamous ‘Hofmeister kink’ - the slope of the window line in front of the rear wheels. A design feature introduced to accentuate the rear wheel drive nature of BMW cars in the 60s.

Either way interesting comparison and cool generations meeting.
