Today i decided to do a sketch map of Africa showing West Africa and Nigeria. In geography, the production of map is known as cartography. It is an art, science and technology of map making, map use together with there study as a scientific document.
Let me only discuss map production as an ART. It is an art because it involves historical development. This is evidence from the work of earlier cartographer who embellished their maps with all sort of things like ornate lettering and other coloring method. This aesthetic attraction and artistic display comfirm map making as an ART.
In producing this map, i make use of A4 size tracing paper, cartography pen 5, template 5, pencil and colour. As you can see in the image below which only show a sketch map of Africa.
This drawing can mean anything to anybody because in cartography, before any drawing or artistic display can be regarded as map, it must contain some certain features.
A good map must have the following;
. Title
. Key/Legend
. Cardinal point indicating north pole
. Author
. Boarder line
I titled this map a sketch map of african showing an outline of West Africa and Nigeria so that readers will be able to know that this is not a map of Asia or Europe but a map of Africa.
The importance of using key or legend is to be able to identify some features located on the map. Your key can be anything as far as you can use it to pass information to anybody that pick the map for use.
On this map, i make use of numbers to represent countries in West Africa. Each number indicate the location of each country on the map. We can also make use of color to indicate anything on the map. On this map, i make use of color green to make nigeria standout as a case study.
Lettering on this map is done with template 5 and cartography pen 5
