Ubud Raw Goes Beyond Zero Waste

in catalyst •  6 years ago

We're really excited to announce our first small business ecobrick Catalyst! For the last year, the GEA team has been working on a program to assist companies that are keen to not only transition from plastic, but to contribute to the removal of plastic from the biosphere. And this week, Ubud Raw is our first official partner.

Ubud Raw Chocolate is a small Bali, Indonesia based company that is renown for its unique super-organic chocolate. All their chocolate is produced locally, then distributed to cafes and restaurants, including UR's flagship stores, around Bali.

Last week the entire company took the afternoon off to learn how to ecobrick. Senior GEA Trainers, Russell Maier and Ani Himawati, along with company founder and president, Rolf Gibbs, sat down for an Ecobrick Starter Workshop. The 19 person staff, from the manager to the security guard, learned all about plastic and its dangers, and the lack of solutions for their plastic waste in Bali. They all then sat down to ecobrick-- not only Ubud Raw's accumulated plastic, but the personal plastic of the staff for the last few weeks. Each staff member completed and logged their ecobrick on the GoBrik app.

In total the staff were able to pack 10kgs of plastic in the one sitting. But more than that, they are now equiped with the insights and skills to keep going. As the next year unfolds, Ubud Raw aims to not only pack all of its produced and consumed plastic, but to inspire even more. This additional plastic packing, or 'sequestration' will be tracked in the companies new GEA Catalyst App. In so doing the company will establish its on new key performance indicator: its Plastic Transition Ratio.
