"A very bad event" is the exact definition of "catastrophic," which characterises a circumstance that will have especially dire consequences.
Everybody may run into some bad circumstances in their daily lives. In the face of these unfavourable circumstances, it is quite reasonable to have negative thoughts.
When these unfavourable circumstances arise, some people might think much more negatively than others. These individuals might even imagine things that are essentially unreal.
Catastrophic thoughts are those that have the power to magnify the negative consequences of events and push a person towards catastrophe. Nearly everyone experiences stressful circumstances. Overcoming such challenging circumstances is a difficult journey for everyone.
But, those who are adept at handling stress can more readily resolve these challenging circumstances by using a logical thought process. Some people, on the other hand, find it impossible to think clearly under such trying circumstances.
Under the influence of catastrophic rather than rational ideas, these people imagine the worst-case scenario when faced with stressful circumstances. They consequently exacerbate the already difficult situation and suffer personal consequences as a result. Catastrophic thinking is problematic in this regard.
It is common for students to occasionally struggle in particular classes during their academic careers. But if a student who struggles to pass a course thinks about things like "What if I fail every time?" or "I think I will never pass this course," or "I am an incompetent person and I cannot fix it," these thoughts become disastrous.
There is no guarantee, under normal circumstances, that a student who fails a course will fail in all facets of their life. Additionally, it is common for people to ignore phone calls when they are occupied.
On the other hand, those experiencing catastrophic thoughts can believe that they are the focus of this circumstance. In these situations, these folks could think things like, "He doesn't want to talk to me anymore," or "He didn't answer my phone because I'm making him uncomfortable." Usually, these are irrational ideas.
Those who have catastrophic ideas, however, frequently have a tendency to generalise about their circumstances. When the smallest bad incident happens to these folks, they could believe that "my life is over now" or that "I'm ruined, I've ruined everything."
While the individual may not always envision negative outcomes from the situations they go through, they may become anxious when others close to them voice their pessimistic views about the circumstances.
For instance, a student who is leaving a test may feel that it went quite well, but they may also grow anxious after hearing remarks from another student leaving the class, such as "The exam was very difficult" or "The exam went very badly, I think I'm going to fail the course."
