Cat Eyes - Shine Bright Like a Diamond

As the hit song from Rhianna says, your cat’s eyes most definitely shine bright like a diamond. Cats are elegant and possess beautiful eyes that will dazzle and capture the attention of many. Let’s take a closer look into the secrets behind these gem like eyes that our feline friends use to see us and the world with.

Eye color is not often discussed when referring to breeds of cats, we often divide them into long hair, short hair and medium length in between. You may also be interested to know there is an intrinsic link between coat and eye color. An example of his relationship are cats with blue eyes will rarely feature darker coats, though the Tonkinese cats and other patterned kitties can feature beautiful blue eyes. Completely black cats will almost always possess non-blue eyes due to genetics. But, while extremely rare, it’s still possible for black cat to have blue colored eyes.

If your cat is completely black like a night sky, their eyes will typically be a shade of yellow or green. If we had to relate sparkling gems, we might call them eyes of citrine or emeralds.

Many cat lovers are in awe when looking at cats with blue eyes. A common mistake to make when looking at kittens is to assume that their visible blue eyes at birth are indication of their eye color as they grow. Eye color does not change based on environmental factors. Just as human babies, kittens lack pigmentation when they are born and this can give the effect of blue-gray eyes. However, for pure breed cats such as the long-haired ragdoll, their eyes will always be a brilliant blue. Black ragdoll cats also exist but their eyes are never blue and this is due to genetics and inherent ability to produce melanin, this is a natural pigmentation that influences the colors of skins, eyes and hair.

Eye color is often telling of a cat’s lineage and genetic pool. For breeders that seek a transparent and known gene pool, there are features that simply cannot exist without cross breeding. For example, pure Siamese and Himalayan cats are known to be sweet and affectionate, and specifically feature bright blue eyes that glimmer like sapphires.

There are cases where cats are labelled as a certain pure-breed due to their overall appearance but a disparity in expected eye color indicates that there has been a cross of breeds somewhere, expanding the gene pool. Gene diversity is not necessarily a bad thing, but for breeders who seek to maintain pure-bred cats under regulation, this would be an immediate concern.

Feline Cats Eyes – Colorful Gemstones That See Everything

Deep Blue Sapphires

Blue eyes, something every cat would have been seen to have since birth. As explained above, this is due to early development of a kitten that has yet to fulfill pigmentation around the eyes. We like to say that every cat has once seen with their sapphire eyes until it was time to swap their gems for another. After about 6 weeks from birth, pigmentation will begin to emerge and their true eye color will fill in within a few months.

Blue eyes white cat, sounds like one of our mythical trading card monsters but this refers to a combination that is related to eventual loss of hearing. It’s important to note that the loss of hearing is due to genetics and the blue eyes are an indication of absent melanin in the body.

Green Emeralds to Energize

Green is a color we associated with energy and life. Such precious emerald eyes can sometimes seem to be mixed with other hues, mostly brown. Green eyes are captivating and make up a small population of cats around the world. It’s also a sign with lower melanin activity in the body. There are a number of cats that can potentially have gorgeous green eyes including Turkish Angora, Sphynx, Russian Blue and more.

Sunset Orange and Ambers That Warm

Yellow eyes or we could call them terrific Topaz cats eyes are common in cats. Ample melanin in a cat will result in yellow eyes and it’s also linked to darker fur coats. We feel energized and warm when looking at our topaz eyed cats.

Mythical Odd Colored Eyes

Not everything in the world of cat’s eyes is linear. There are cases where a cat can possess different colored eyes, this is called heterochromia. Cases will often see blue mixed with another iris color where not enough melanin has been able to reach the eye, turning it blue. This is a condition that is associated with cat hearing loss but it’s not a disease and many cats live just fine while looking ever so colorful.

Heterochromia is a genetic inheritance that effects movement of melanin to the eye. Some genes will prevent this movement and may even result in one eye being different colors. It’s worth nothing however, if your cat’s eyes have started changing color after initial growing stages, it’s an indication of an underlying problem. Immediate medical attention is needed from your vet.

No matter the color of your fur baby’s eyes, they are precious and we love making eye contact with our cats briefly, exchanging a slow blink to show our emotions of content. Meow! 😺
